Throat Pain

I just started smoking cigars, and I've been having just a little bit of pain in my throat. I was wondering if that is normal. (I haven't been inhaling.)

Re: Throat Pain

May just be irritating your throat. I would think that when your throat gets used to it that it should stop. I have never heard anyone complain of this so I am just guessing.

Re: Throat Pain

Just to be safe have your Doc take a look if your throat wasn't giving you problems before you took this hobby up. The body has its own way of telling you when things arent quite right and there are some people who probably should never take up this vice at all. Better to steer towards the side of caution on this than live to regret it later. Hope things go well for you.

No sense in taking chances. It's possible that the cigar smoke is irritating some underlying condition. Welcome to the Jungle!

Re: Throat Pain

Where do you live? My throat and sinuses bother me all the time because of allergies. I'm in L.A., it gets dry, windy and after it rains (happens about once every 10 years), it gets especially bad when the wind whips up the pollen. It could be this ON TOP OF the cigar that's bothering your throat.

Re: Throat Pain

Also, just want to add... are you drinking anything while smoking? If not, definitely make sure to drink something. Sitting there for an hour or more smoking a cigar with nothing to drink is isn't good for the throat, just way too dry.

Re: Throat Pain

You should definitely pay your doc a visit cause I've been smoking since April of this year and I haven’t experienced any pain in my throat.

Re: Throat Pain

This happens to me quite often actually. It has a lot to do with what you drink with the cigar, (please drink something!) and also the speed at which you smoke. If you smoke too quick, the smoke gets hot and can burn/irritate your throat.

So - my advice -take a few days off from smoking and once you start back up, grab a drink and smoke sloooower.

Re: Throat Pain

+1 on the slower, I find that the cigar tastes a ton better too! if you're looking for a drink suggestion, I like coke zero. the carbonation cleanses the palette very nicely

Re: Throat Pain

My throat has never been bothered by any cigar.

Regardless though, following a Dr's visit, I'd recommend always have something to drink when you smoke. I prefer water (not much of a "drinker") but there are plenty of "adult beverages" that will compliment any cigar. This should help alot.
