opinions on leaving the plastic on or off?
I had a huge message typed out but it refused to send...no idea why.
Asides from stoping flavour mingling, is there any reason to leave the plastic on a cigar when it's in the humidor? Doesn't this stop the humidor from working it's magic on them? I conducted an experiment with a tin of ten macaduno ascots that I found to be acidic and very unpleasant. I snipped the ends off of half the remaining cigars and left them for 2 weeks, came back and compared them again. The plastic wrapped ones were still identical and horribly bitter, yet the ones that had their chance to breath had been transformed and had lost every bit of the acidity. I'd be interested to hear thoughts on this...All I've found so far is that the plastic leaves the cigars tasting a little couped up. Rob. |

I have done both. Cello on cello off, I do not believe it makes a difference. IMHO.

RE: opinions on leaving the plastic on or off?
[updated:LAST EDITED ON Oct-29-02 AT 06:19 AM (CDT)]Bread,
If you would do a search on this subject about cellophane on or off, you'd get a score of results about it. Cello on or off, usually you'll see doesn't matter much. However, to answer your questions. Asides from stoping flavour mingling, is there any reason to leave the plastic on a cigar when it's in the humidor? This is another one of these old wife's tales that has come to its fruition from the repeated use of it as gospel. If you ask around, 90-95% of the people who know cigars will tell you flavor "marrying" is a bunch of nonsense. The only time flavor marrying may be an issue, and I say may because usually no one sticks with it long enough to find out, is when you are storing cigars for years and years. My best advice, forget about the whole marrying issue. Doesn't this stop the humidor from working it's magic on them? It can. If you are putting your cigars in the humi and plan on smoking them very soon or giving them away, then its usually polite to leave the cello on. But if you intend to keep them for yourself and smoke them at your own pace, then you should take them off. Remember, naked is always better. :+ I conducted an experiment with a tin of ten macaduno ascots that I found to be acidic and very unpleasant. I snipped the ends off of half the remaining cigars and left them for 2 weeks, came back and compared them again. The plastic wrapped ones were still identical and horribly bitter, yet the ones that had their chance to breath had been transformed and had lost every bit of the acidity Probably because they were Macanudos.. ![]() It could be because of the cello. Also, it depends on what condition the cigars were in prior to arriving at your humi for a nap. There are several other things that go into validating this experiment. You may be on to something, but I would definately give it a go around once or twice with a couple of boxes of the same brand & type just for consistency. -Justin |

[updated:LAST EDITED ON Oct-29-02 AT 06:36 AM (CDT)]I would have to agree with Justin on all accounts except for one thing flavors will marry, should you decide to smoke Acid or Lars tetans do not put them in your humidor with your regular cigars their aroma will permeate your regular sticks.:-)

I have never found it to make a difference.
I have experimented with two boxes where I took half and removed the cello and left half with them on. Put them in the same humi. Can't tell the difference. Leaving the cello on is good if you are going to slide them in a finger case to take with you but other wise... |

RE: opinions on leaving the plastic on or off?
Hello Bread,
I'm new to these boards, but I'll take a stab. I like to store my sticks naked, it helps the humidity equalize faster than it does in a cello and allows for the off-gassing that your cigars naturally emit. These trapped gasses probably explain the bitterness you described in your celloed stogies. As for marrying,(the mingleing of essential oils that rise to the surface in the form of "bloom") it takes years of side by side storage for different sticks to "marry". I don't know about you , but mine usually don't last that long. Any "special" sticks that I want to save go into a separate 'dor and have dividers between. So really it is just a matter of personal preference and as for marrying, I wouldn't worry too much about it.

eye thangew...guys, and welcome fireman.
Cigarbid just happened to me and my humidor is going to become superbly full this week. I was thinking I'd disrobe the whole caboodle and let them do their naughty cigar thing without the cellos. *beam* Rob. |

RE: opinions on leaving the plastic on or off?
I had read an article that said cigars in a humidor w/ the plastic left on them have a tendency to develop mold when compared to cigars w/o a plastic wrap. Their justification was that plastic would hold in moisture if there was any type of condensation.
I have a buddy that stores his cigs in the plastic in his humidor and he has yet to have one grow mold. I think it's personal preference, as I think it looks better w/o, but to each their own... -Paul |

RE: opinions on leaving the plastic on or off?
I know that I'm nitpicking, but cellophane is not "plastic". I did a 'google' search:
"An important factor in the growth of cellophane production and sales was the perfection of moistureproof cellophane, a superior product of du Pont research and patented by that company through a 1927 application. Making Cellophane In the manufacturing process, an alkaline solution of cellulose fibres (usually wood or cotton) known as viscose is extruded through a narrow slit into an acid bath. The acid regenerates the cellulose, forming a film. Further treatment, such as washing and bleaching, yields cellophane."
