Trouble Lighting
I just started smoking cigars, and I have been having a lot of trouble lighting them. I have been doing a pre-toast and then lighting them by rotating the cigar and puffing, but when I blow on the end to see if it's evenly lit, there are still areas that aren't lit, so I have to light another match and light the unlit parts, but then it burns unevenly. I was wondering if anyone could tell me what I'm doing wrong.

Re: Trouble Lighting
Nothing wrong with using more than one match. Be patient, a good, slow light is part of the ritual.
I often even touch up a light when I use a lighter. Take a look at this video. I think you'll find it enlightening. Click here for video |

Re: Trouble Lighting
As said above it does take time to learn what works for you. I have used 5-6 matches before. I find it works best to let the flame build up before i try to light it, like the guy does in the video. Turn the match upside down and get a good size flame before starting. I like to use a Torch lighter. Next time you pick up a cigar pick up a cheap one just to try.

Re: Trouble Lighting
Also, if you don't get a good cherry burning on your first attempt, blow on the end some like you would embers on a fire or charcoal to get a fire going. You will see the burn expand to some of the areas you didn't get on your first try. I do this a lot and it works very well.

Re: Trouble Lighting
I do not do the pre-light "toast". I get the flam just off of the cigar and take a few strong pulls while rotating and the cigar is lit much faster and more even I find than toasting. I do not notice a difference from toasting or not.
If anything, directly lighting the cigar has yielded me less burning around the cigar.

I'm not into the lighting ritual thing, just light, smoke and enjoy. I use a triple flame torch and lighting is a breeze, and fast. |
