Cigars in zip-loc bags?

My humidor isn't taking well to a new environment, and I'm thinking that it may not have been seasoned properly to begin with. As I try again and attempt to get things evened out where they should be, will it be alright to store my dozen or so cigars in a large zip-loc bag?

They shouldn't be in there any longer than a day or two, at the most.

They will be just fine. Think about it,,when you order cigars online and it takes 2-3 days to get to you they arrive ok, right?

Re: Cigars in zip-loc bags?

Then what would be the longest time they could left in the bags and they would be OK?

Re: Cigars in zip-loc bags?

Lew Rothman, the owner of JR Cigars, used to write in his catlogs that the best humidifier was a Tupperware container. This from a retailer who sold humidors.

Until they dried out. In theory, if they had some sort of humidification and a good seal, you could keep them in there forever.

Re: Cigars in zip-loc bags?

Tupperware works great as a travel and temporary humidor for me. I throw in my humidifier and hydrometer too.

Ziploc bags are too fragile for me, especially when packing in luggage.

Re: Cigars in zip-loc bags?

zip-locs and tupperwares are fine. I've used a small ziploc (perforated on one edge) with a paper towl wetted with 50/50 solution as a ghetto humidifier inside of a larger ziploc before...and it worked great.

Re: Cigars in zip-loc bags?

If you get all the air out of the bag, then your sticks will keep their humidity longer. Otherwise, the dry air in the bag will suck humidity from your cigars until they both equalize. The more you open the bag, the quicker they will dry out.

You can get Humidipacks for under $1. They are small boveda packs, the size of a moist towelette from a BBQ restaurant. I've gone several weeks with a single humidipack. You could probably get several months out of a full sized boveda pack in a zip lock bag.

A plastic bag works fine as to humidify your sticks, but it offers little additional protection. Every time you handle the bag, you're disturbing all of the cigars. The more you handle a cigar, the more likely it is to be dropped, banged or damaged. The thin plastic bag offers little in the means of physical protection or insulation from temperature or light.

Compare that to to a desktop humidor that never gets moved. You can open and close it all day, and never bump a single stick. If your cat knocks a lamp over, it won't crush your sticks. If someone leaves a window open all night, they won't change temp as quickly.
