Clipping a Cigar

Okay, I am ready to be abused, about this question. It seems like when ever I clip the head of my cigars, the end I clip comes apart. Are they to dry, or am I just not clipping the cap correctly? It has me worried about my humi, not keeping good RH.

The whole trick is not to cut beyond the cap line.

Here is a newbie trick that I still use. If you use a single or double blade cutter ... lay your cutter flat on a table ... put the head of the cigar into the cutter until it touches the table ... clip ... perfect cut 99% of the time.

PS. Doesn't work for a belicoso / torpedo

Do you have another reason, taste or burn, to suspect a rh problem?

Re: Clipping a Cigar

you are probably cutting too much of the head off. The cap holds the wrapper together. I cut at the "shoulders" of the head.......the point where the cap rounds off to the top.

I am with Qwerty. Use that method for a while and ya will get an idea how to cut with out cliping too much.

Re: Clipping a Cigar

I like to use a really sharp knife to cut the cap. I slowly go around the cap with the knife blade to keep from cutting too much off, I can cut off as much of the cap as I want that way. I probably spend too much time sharpening knives though... That works really well for me, however, also doesn't work for a figurado

Me I just use a quick snip and do not try and ease it. Not a monster as hard as ya can go, but solid and quick.

Somewhat...just make sure the cut is made in one swift motion, so the cut is even. I still use the table trick, almost always a perfect cut. With torpedos, just use the table trick over and over again until the cut is the way you like it.

Get yourself a good double blade cutter for starters. The cheapo plastic single blade cutters do work but invest a few bucks on a good one. I use a Xikar and it has worked great with no problems at all.

I'm not sure that you can clip it too fast. Don't just gently squeeze it until it cuts ... just cut it.

Re: Clipping a Cigar

The first step involved in preparing a cigar for use is to open a passage way allowing air to circulate from one end to the other. Some smokers elect to bite the tip off the cigar; its quick and easy solution and there is no need to carry around any tools along. Most cigar connoisseurs however use specialized clipper that provide a clean, manicured cut.

If a cutter is used, the incision should be made quickly and decisively. The cutter should be placed just above the cigar's cap line (the curved area that covers the head of the cigar) and clipped in one swift motion. This produces a clean cut which is desirable for smoking a cigar.

Once the cigar has been clipped using the smokers preferred method, it is ready to be lit.

Nobody else uses a really sharp knife?! It works great, I'm telling you! Much better than a good cutter, imho. Give it a shot, I promise, you will like it (provided the knife is sharp enough).

I did this once when a friend gifted me a stick and neither of us had a cutter. Worked ok, I still prefer my Xikar. Probly just takes more practice than I'm willing to put into it. Xikar is fool proof!! To each his own I suppose...

+1 on the Xikar.
One, clean quick motion on the cut. I cut the cap so there is a "shoulder" still intact on the cigar.

I did for a while. But then I always have a sharp knife on me. Just found that with a good cutter ya can do it and get on with things and not have to pay too much attention. But that is my fault for rushing a light on a good cigar. Wha you do works well and did for me for a long time.
