N-E way here goes my first question.

Why can I just use salt to humidify my cigars. If its good enough to calibrate a hydrogemeter?

My best guess why not is that it is to high at a humidity equilibirum of 75% whereas I want something like 70-72 %

AmI going to grow mold at 75%?
Three -- yes, three. Oh, wait that licks to get to the middle of a Tootse Pop. OK, you get as many as you want.

there are no stupid questions...but i dont think that salt would hold moisture enough, and might cause other problems to the humi

I average 68% but i had to add extra moisture sources to make that happen. dont just assume that you can fill your humidifier up and your good, it may not be enough, it certainly wasnt for me.
Good point here as I live in Atlanta and got the 70% beads and now wish I had gotten the 65% due to the unbelievable humidity in the summer. Burn problems like I never believed possible. I keep my torch handy to level it out when it goes sideways and now I have had to dry box my smokes.:eeek:

PS It isn't the stupid questions as much as it might be the answers you receive from the boys as they tend to get a bit rowdy but all in good fun.

Follow up on the Salty water humidification

Hi all,

Just wanted to report back an observation. I've notice that the salt tends to travel, or move up and out of the container its in . I used small sauce bowls (like you'd put soy sauce in for sushi) and within 3 days, the salt had dried, but the bottom side of the bowl had salt crystals! Not good if this sits on top of your cigars!

New Question,

Is distilled water that important? Can I get away with using my brita water?

I wouldn't use any water but distilled. Why take a chance when a gallon of distilled costs around $1.00?I have used Reverse Osmosis purified water in a small desk top Humi as a exsperiment with good results so far,but you can buy enough distilled water to last years with what an RO system costs.

I'm with Jon on this one, as cheap as it is I'd rather not run the risk. My understanding is that Distilled will have the least amount of bacteria, etc.

Definitely Distilled water. I tried tap water (well water) on some Heartfelt beads and they discolored and did not work as well.

If ye raise the RH too much, the cigars are more likely to grow big feet, and even mold. Also, salt is a very corrosive mineral. Ye're probably better off with a simple spong, if ye're looking for something cheap.
