I had the same issue. I used a combination of opening the lid occasionally and putting the beads in dry to absorb some of the humidity.

It takes far longer that 24 hours to season a Humi. Be patient and give it time. It should take a week or so. Definitely get some beads they will help tremendously.

Yeah, I didn't realize you arrived at this over 24 hours. It took me a week and a half and a spilled glass of distilled water to arrive at 86 RH. Give it time to mellow out.

If you have some cigars that you need to put in there, put them in a tupperware container with a water pillow or other humidification device.

I used a couple of bowls of steaming water set on a trivet to get things going. Place it in, wait four hours and repeat, let sit overnight. Te steam opens the pores and makes for quicker absorption. An old trick from yacht woodworking.

First time I've ever heard that. Interesting.

That's fine if it works for you , but don't think I would steam a humidor. The cedar linings are usually so thin I would be afraid I would cause a slight warp and ruin the integrity of the unit.

I too think that the cedar will warp.

I dont use the steam method for seasoning for the same reason that I dont use the wipe down method. I dont like to force the wood to accept moisture. You know how when you were a kid and your parents forced you to do things? It never turned out good for anyone. Same goes for humidors, when you force the wood to accept the moisture, there is potential for a catastrophic failure (maybe not quite that dramatic, but you get the idea lol). I will ALWAYS place a few shot glasses of water in the humidor and leave it closed for at least a week. That way, the wood naturally absorbs the moisture as it evaporates into the air. Thus the moisture settles into the wood as it would in nature and the earth is at peace

Just my theory.

use beads to help balance it out and to absorb excess moisture... make sure the beads themselves are NOT dry if you use them. you dont want too much moisture being pulled out too quickly.

I suggest looking at the Xikar humidifier gel containers. its basically the beads/crystals but they are ready to go as soon as you purchase them. they're easy to use, and easy to keep track of.

I agree, the gel works best to help balance the humidity

It may be best to leave the boiling water to the yacht woodworking, as it seems it is not well adapted to seasoning humidors.

Beads would be ideal for this situation.. I would only put half the recommended amount of distilled in the beads, and let it absorb some of the extra from the box.

Seasoning a good humidor is like cooking good BBQ. The only 3 words you need to know are "low and slow"
