Does the crunch sound always mean too dry?
My cigars are being kept at 70%, why do I still hear the crunch sound when I press on them? Can cigars at normal rh do this or are mine too dry?

Re: Does the crunch sound always mean too dry?
they should not crunch. is it possible where you purchased them from did not keep them properly humidified? Are you certain the 70% reading is accurate?

Are you sure your hygrometer readings are correct? @ 70% you should not be hearing the crunching sound.

Is your hygrometer digital? Them analog ones have given me too much trouble to calibrate and maintain calibrated. A good bet is to go to a good B&M who takes care of their cigars at the right temp and humidity and try to calibrate your hygrometer from their readings. I personally like to keep mine at 65%.

Re: Does the crunch sound always mean too dry?
The crunch sound means they're perfect for my preferences, but I don't think they do that at 70%. Like the others said, I would check if your hygrometer is calibrated. But IMHO, if they're smoking fine I don't know why anybody bothers with the exact RH and calibration and all that business. I just keep my beads hydrated and say "F that noise" to all that.

Re: Does the crunch sound always mean too dry?
I've wondered this before too.
But I've never been sure if I'm actually following the correct procedure when I do press on it. I also feel that "crunch" might be an objective term, maybe. Is it normal for there to be a small "crack" noise if you perhaps feel it a bit too hard? I'm pretty tired, so I'm not sure if I'm making much sense with what I'm saying, also, so feel free to ignore me. :P Like mentioned on here though, I usually don't worry since they've been smoking just fine.

Re: Does the crunch sound always mean too dry?
I always find that there is a slight sound when I press on a cigar, unless they are very moist. It's like a slight rustle sound. I've always found this to be a natural thing, so I've also questioned this saying that any crackling noise when slightly pressing on the cigar means it is too dry.

I see what you're doing!!

Re: Does the crunch sound always mean too dry?
There is a difference between a crunch and a CRUNCH. Cigars stored at 70% RH usually *do* give off a little bit of crunch when squeezed, but not like walking through a bunch of dried leaves... <G> If you hear a loud crack, you squeezed it too hard and split the wrapper.
