Trader etiquette?

First off let me just say that this merely an honest question and not intended to ruffle any feathers! I'm pretty new to cigars and forums so this is only for my own personal knowledge.

Anyway, I trader with a member of another forum lately in two seperate PIFs. All went well for the most part other than having to wait for him to post what he had received from me for over a week or so (not that big of a deal really). The second trade I did with him I tried to send him completly different sticks than the first time around. In doing so I had bought from a somewhat local B&M. Several of the sticks were non-namebrand cigars which I had been introduced to by the B&M owner a few months ago. Personally I like them, but to each his own. The long and short of it is a few days later I had seen that he had passed those same cigars along to someone else in a trade. Maybe he just doesn't care for those cigars, maybe he was running low, maybe our palletes are totally different...I don't know. I guess I'm just being small about this but I was a little disappointed. I do trades to get to know everybody and also get to be known. I also get to sample cigars that I have yet to try and pass cigars along that I think might be worth sampling.

In an early trade with a different member, they had admittedly sent me cigars they received in a previous trade that they did not care for. I'm not trying to be the cigar forum police and I'm definitely not looking for sympathy, I was just hoping to get some feedback from others about their trading etiquette and/or practices. Am I just being lame?

Thanks for reading this far, if you have, and I hope this isn't taken as hostile. I'm really just wondering what is protocal since I'm really just a newbie in all respects. Thanks to all who have trader with me and to the friends I have yet to meet.

Matt

Re: Trader etiquette?

I have been involved in a few trades in my time on this forum and others and I always trade with the knowledge that when they go out they become the property of the person I sent them to. Yes, I have also seen the very same cigars being forwarded to somebody else and I figure that either the person does not like them or they just want to pass on them for their own reasons. As you said, I don't want to become the cigar police and try to direct people on what to smoke,,,they are just sent and once they are out I don't care what they do with them. I'd prefer they smoke it but if they don't it doesn't matter. If you were to continue to send this same person the same cigars or different cigars and they keep doing the same thing by trading them forward then maybe you might want to rethink sending out anymore or just do some more research into what cigars they like.

Re: Trader etiquette?

It does sound bad, like re-gifting,, but I agree with Cigary once you send them to someone it is up to them what they do with them, you cant force them to smoke them, I think it is the thought that counts.

Re: Trader etiquette?

Very well put. Once you trade they are the property of the one who receives them. The only rule of etiquette is that you don't sell or make a profit on cigars that are gifted. I have been sent cigars that I don't care for, but are popular sticks that someone else would enjoy. Nothing wrong with that.

The trick is not getting our feelings hurt when it happens. Remember that some people like vanilla ice cream and others chocolate. We each have our own personal tastte and preference.

Re: Trader etiquette?

Thanks guys for your perspective. I guess I was just taking it personal for no reason. Like I previously stated I didn't ask this to be nasty I was just curious about the etiquette. Now I know better

BTW, this was not directed at anyone on this forum and I 've been completely stoked with my all of my interactions here. Oh, and Andy, I smoked that Leonino today and was impressed! Thank you very much!

Re: Trader etiquette?

I think it's poor etiquette to re-gift a cigar, but not much one can do about it. I have received cigars in PIFs that I currently have in my own stock. I hope that if someone sees me pass one of these onto another, they don't get the wrong idea. I usually keep the ones I receive in a PIF and send off the ones from my cooler. I am always up to try new smokes so I would personally NEVER re-gift a cigar.

The thing I would have a problem with is if it was a Wish you fulfilled for someone and they turned around and traded it for something or sold it.

Re: Trader etiquette?

I will admit to re-gifting some cigars that I recieve in trades/bombs, but typically it is to the Troops. No point in saving cigars that I won't smoke because of principle when the people over-seas would be glad to have them

Very well said and I have also passed on a cigar in a PIF or other trade since I knew beforehand that the particular cigar was one I didn't care for. Conversely, I would never sell for profit on any cigar that was passed to me as I feel that would be morally wrong for me to do that. I am not preaching for everyone else on this,,,just myself.

Agreed on this point as well. I would like to think that everyone has the same outlook on gifting a cigar to somebody where they aren't forcing that person to smoke it if they don't like it,,,that's just wrong to me. If I know someone likes a particular cigar that I don't I will be on the lookout for him/her and send it along with my compliments. I have cigars in my humis that I sent along to friends who like them,,,why should I keep something I don't care for? Sooooo, off they go to someone who will appreciate it and smoke it. Technically, once you gift somebody a cigar it becomes there cigar,,,not yours unless you are a "cigar indian giver" in which case what is the motivation to be like that? Just never quite undertood this type of thinking.

I am glad you brought that up as well. We are putting together a package to send overseas to the boys. If anyone wants to send cigars, cutters, lighters or humidors to the military, pm me and you can send them to me and we will send them for you. My local B&M is donating a bunch, but we need as much stuff as we can send... good cigars, cheap cigars. It doesn't matter.

Re: Trader etiquette?

I agree that it is up to the reciever to do what they want...but...Imagine this:

PIF'ed someone some cigars. About two weeks later, I posted some cigars to sell. That person I PIF'ed offered a trade and two of the cigars were the ones I gave him. Geez, really?
