Top of the cigar to ya!

Lately I have been noticing that I really enjoy the first half of the cigar, but the second half I am not as much a fan of. I know it has something to do with double tobacco from the initial first half. Does anyone else have this similar experiance?

I would almost think I should chop half of it off before I smoke and then nub the rest for another day

Whattaya mean double tobacco just in the first half?

I've sometimes found the 2nd half or the last 1/3 of a cigar to be less enjoyable yeah...depends on the cigar (and maybe my mood!)...

As you smoke the cigar, the flavor can get more intense as the nicotine builds up in what's left of the cigar. You could be tasting this nic buildup and that might be turning you off.

But for heaven's sake, don't chop it in half! Smoke it until it's not enjoyable anymore... If you chop it off, you open yourself up to a bunch of problems starting with the fact that the sucker will unravel on you. In addition, cigars are contstructed and rolled in such a way that you should start from the beginning and smoke it until you're satisfied with it.

Re: Top of the cigar to ya!

Alot of the time the tars build up in the last part of the cigar and make the taste nasty.

Try purging it and for a lil more fun while you are purging hold a lit lighter at the end while you blow out...pretty colors!!

I usually cant stand the 1st inch or so but that most likely due to me burning the foot instead of toasing...LOL

User error on my part!

Re: Top of the cigar to ya!

Yeah, depends on the cigar like Reindeer said - some cigars I find I like the last bits better than the first bits. You get the tar/tobacco resin building up more and more on the unsmoked tobacco as you progress through the cigar. One thing that can help is actually blowing air through the cigar a few times, this can make a difference sometimes if it starts to head south, but doesn't always help.

I have also found that this can be worse if the cigar is too moist. If you don't already, try dry-boxing your cigars a bit before you smoke them. Also, make sure you have a good drink to cleanse the pallet.

Do a search on it and you will find plenty of threads about this. Basically it involves storing your cigar/s at a lower humidity before you smoke it. It helps with draw issues and brings out the flavor.

Re: Top of the cigar to ya!

I often find myself in the same postion. Two things happen that affect the flavor of a cigar as you smoke it. One, as was stated above, tars and nicotine build up as you smoke. These tars have a bitter flavor. The more concentrated they become, the more it will affect the flavor. Two, as you smoke, the smoke travels a shorter distance and has much less time to cool off. Hot smoke will burn your tongue and may make a cigar seem overly spicy.

To combat the tars, you can let your cigar rest outside the humidor for a day or two before smoking it. This will remove some of the moisture and lessen the amount of tar buildup in your stogie. The easiest thing to do to keep from burning your tongue is to smoke slower. The slower you smoke, the cooler your smoke will be. Following these tips, you should be able to smoke more of your cigar, and increase your enjoyment.

Re: Top of the cigar to ya!

thanks everyone for you great advice and opinions. I used the tips and tricks you all mentioned above for my two smoking sessions and it worked out great. The one great take off was from mrreindeer, smoke it until you don't want it anymore.. with that being said, happy smoking to all.
