Maduro ?
Last night I settled in to watch the high school hockey tourney. I grabbed a Taboo torpedo, pulled the cello off, gave it a quick inspection and fired it up. I like the Taboo HSG, and at first glance that's what I thought it was. After taking a couple of puffs I realized it wasn't an HSG. I dug the cello out of the trash. It was a Taboo Limited Reserve Maduro from a sampler. The flavor was more of a sweet cocoa, the spice left a very pleasant mild peppery burn. The other Maduros (Oliva O, RP Olde World Reserve, 5 Vegas A, Gurkha Doble) I've tried had a much darker wrapper and flavor with heavier pepper. I find this lighter flavor more appealing. I'd like to try some other brands with this lighter, sweeter flavor. Suggestions appreciated.

Re: Maduro ?
Can someone help a newbie out, what exactly makes a wrapper a Maduro?
I have heard different things from different people, and I am pretty sure it is not about the color. Because basically I found out that I like a darker cigar, but I do not seem to like the Maduro's so much. Is this odd? Recently I picked up some Montecristo Media Noche and I really enjoyed them, but when I was given a sample in as a freebie that containd both an Oliva G Maduro and a Indian Tobacco Super Feunte Maduro, I really did not like either one, even though I like both in the natual wrapper. I am now hesitant to buy a dark cigar becasue I am not sure if it will be a Maduro or just darker. Thanks. |

Re: Maduro ?
MADURO: A shade of wrapper varying from a very dark brown to almost black. The color results from longer exposure to the sun, a cooking process or longer fermentation.
I find the darker the wrapper, the more the taste leans toward a bittersweet dark chocolate, expresso like taste. I think most Maduro smokers prefer the darker flavor. I find that I enjoy this type of cigar more when I team it with a sweeter beverage to temper the heavy bittersweet flavor. My preference runs more to the medium brown sungrown and habano wrappers, but I do ocassionally like a darker cigar. I have smoked the CAO Brazzillia. Good but still has a heavy dark flavor. I'm looking for some milder sweeter options, if the Taboo dissappears. |

I think the Padilla Obsidian has a sweet taste to it.

Re: Maduro ?
Oliva and Padron use a classic maduro wrapper. Traditionally from the top priming, and then fermented a longer time than other tobaccos. Some manufacturers cheat, and cook, steam, or dye their "maduro" leaf. It will not have the same depth of character as the real thing. Maduro is a process that can be applied to any type of tobacco. True maduro is not considered strong, but is sweet because of the additional fermentation, and has an over riding chocolatey/earthy flavor.
