Sick nicotine content? and strength?

Iv been smoking cigarettes for a while now, When I first started smoking cigarettes I got the classic nicotine poising(like in the old donald duck cartoons).
Anyway
the other day I was smoking a rather young flor de oliva corjo,(about 2 weeks out of the cello) and BAM! puking on my shoes.(not really just dizzy, sick feeling and ect, i was loving the spice mabey to much?)

Anyway I would like to avoid getting sick at all cost, I just started smoking cigars a little while ago and really enjoy(and would like to continue).

Is there anyway to tell if a cigar has ALOT of nicotine in it befor you smoke it (so i can pace myself)
what are the tell a tail signs of a cigar that might make you sick?
I noticed the flor de oliva corjo's has a 'fishey' smell when i first opened them, its been a few weeks in the humi and that smell is going away.
And when people say a cigar is stong they mean high nicotine right? a full body is flavor country, while strong is used to describe the nic kick... right?

Any info on this aspect of cigars would be nice thanks

Im guessing your inhaling them? There is no need to inhale cigar smoke. Youll get more than enough nicotine absorbed by your tongue and gums. I even saw the owner of Oliva cigars on a video once saying how your not supposed to inhale cigars. Its on their website if you want to watch it.

My thoughts exactly Koby. My buddy who smoked cigarettes I gave em a cigar years ago and we were smoking. He was coughing real bad after every puff and I noticed he was breathing it all in. Another buddy of mine was smoking Phillies back to back in a car and we had to pull over and he puked in his sweatshirt, then tossed it on the ground (was there for about 4 years on the edge of the road flat as a pancake).

I just got some Flor de Oliva's look forward to trying them.

I would suggest starting off with smaller cigars, maybe cigarillo's. Practice your draw. I only started smoking cigars again about 2 months ago (stopped for 3-4 years, but always followed them in catalogs and magazines). At this point the draw doesn't go past the back of my throat. Just gotta get that sucking motion down (how dirty!).

Welcome to the forums too Jeff. Be nice to the forums, and the forum will be more than nice to you. Great place to learn and socialize. If you need anything give me a holler!

Re: nicotine content? and strength?

Thanks for the lightning fast response.
As far as i no I'm not inhaling deliberately, i mean cigars are not nice when inhaled. I do like to blow the smoke through the nostrils(sort of inhaling).

and they corojo oliva's are pretty good, very fragile wrapper with some ugliness on the wrapper(spots), but a few in the bundle look very nice.
young when shiped, nice spice flavor with nutty hints, cutting the torpedo on an angle helped with tasting for sure....hope they get better with age

Re: nicotine content? and strength?

I do know that a Rocky Patel Edge Maduro Missle has a lil bit of nicotine in it!! That one made me wicked sick...not to the point of pukeing...just everything up to it. Make sure you eat a decent meal and they say that some sugar on your tongue will help cure the nic kick if it happens. Id say if its a "full" cigar you can probably bet its got some nicotine in it. But im no expert.

Usually full-stength cigars are higher in nicotine. Not sure if Maduro wrappers add to this as well.

I'm not 100% sure but I can vaguely recall reading an article that said the longer you age cigars, the more the nicotine fades over time.

Eat or drink something sweet. It kills that queezy felling immediately!

Re: nicotine content? and strength?

To answer the guy's actual question, no, there is no way to tell if a cigar is strong before smoking it without knowing already. Your tobacconist should be able to help you out in this regard before you even buy it. Drink lots of water with the cigar - keeping hydrated kills the effect of the nicotine. If you're feeling queasy anyway, take a couple teaspoons of sugar and dissolve them on your tongue before swallowing them. Temporary fix and works great.

Re: nicotine content? and strength?

I agree with this assessment that there is really no consistent way to tell how strong or the nicotine content of a cigar. Talking to your local tobacconist is a great source of information but in the end it comes down to actually smoking.

A year ago I could only smoke half of a RP edge before I had to put it down. Today I am fine but I still come across a stick that will knock me on my butt like the LFD chisel it starts off mild and ends with a kick. The best bet is to know that smoking a cigar is different from a cigarette. Oliva is a strong cigar period you may want to try a milder maduro like the Gran Habano #5 or Don Thomas maduro.

The 5 Vegas 'A' Series I would consider medium. For some it may be medium-full, but I wouldn't think it's full-bodied. Definitely medium. "Body" here referring to nicotine. As for flavor, there's a lot of it

I am going to try that next time. The last time I felt that way I didn't want to eat anything at all.

Re: nicotine content? and strength?

There is a good bit of discussion on what constitutes strength, some say nicotine content and others not. If a cigar stings your lips, it has a lot of nicotine, and you probably wouldn't like it. The best approach is to learn what constituent tobaccos of a cigar you prefer, and seek out products with that blend. I know that I prefer Nicaraguan puros with a lot of ligero, and a corojo wrapper. These are generally full bodied and fairly strong cigars, and you wouldn't like them. Learn what you like.

Re: nicotine content? and strength?

I transitioned from Ciggys to Gars at the first of the year due my governments desire to tax cigarettes out of existence.

I am probably sure you are inhaling them too much just like I did, oh boy did I ever. Its simple, I`d been inhaling all my life and allot of it (nicotine) was getting by, even tough its a Cigar. Now I have to moderate a few things to be able to go on with GARS.

If I inhale too much, even the weakest GAR is going to be a bad trip. I have to watch the snorkeling, as I love to do it, but this technique gives me allot more nicotine then just puffing, so I`ve had to moderate that a bit so I don`t snorkel the whole gar down and you know, get ill.

I`ve learned to try and taste whats in my mouth occasionally, just let the smoke sit there in my mouth and try and search it, instead of going full tilt and using my sinus`s to do all the tasting.

The first sign I`ve noticed for nicotine toxicity is a slight headache, if you feel that coming on, you are over doing and it`ll go to the stomach next, so for me, thats my cue to lay off, and chill out. I know it kinda sucks specially when I have a really good tasting gar I don't want to let go of. But fortunately nicotine intoxication goes away pretty quickly and if I put a GAR down, I can go back to it in half an hour.

You gotta be very careful with those Camacho`s, LOLOLOL.

FWIW, I would`nt go back to cigarettes for all the tea in china, no way, they stink to much to me now.

Good luck!
