Mold or abscess in humidity.

Re: musty smell

Weird, got a sampler pack just the other day, smoked one and smelled the others , there is no signs of mold on the outside, but they have a weird musty smell
I got the same mustyness from a luis martinez silver selection that i bought from the tobacco store, that was properly stored in a walkin humidor.
this review mentions it too...

Re: musty smell

Mold does not always have to be visible in order to be there. I may be in the beginning stages and that is why it only smells that way. Having said that it could have been that the cigars prior to reaching your B&M could have had the beginning stages of mold prior to when it got there. If the humidity is correct then there may be a smaller chance for it to develop and become visible where your b&m is. Its really hard to say where the culprit lies but a musty smell is not a good thing.

Re: musty smell

That smell = humidity too high, regardless of what your guage(s) say.

Let 'em air-out a bit and they should be OK.

Also, even in perfect humidity you need to let some fresh air in every now and again. Open your humi's for an hour or so every couple of weeks.

Re: musty smell

Not from the cigar itself. I thought the original question was coming from your humidor and not just a stick. If it is affecting your smoke substantially you may have to write them sticks off. If not store them in a separate place in order not to affect other cigars.

Re: musty smell

If you really want to smell something that resembles "mustiness" in cigars, plant your face directly into a box of Davidoffs. The first time I experienced the mustiness of Davidoffs, I was a little worried. But the "stale beer" smell actually seemed to really work well. Dunno how they do it, but it works

Only time I've smelled "mustiness" in cigars though have been Davidoff-made stuff. What I mean to say is that unless it's really off-putting, it just may be intentional...

Re: musty smell

A bad musty smell is mould, and drying them will not get rid of it. It may lessen the intensity of the smell but the mould is still there.
