Re: Wrapper Splitting while smoking

My first guess would be too moist. Whats your RH? How long have you had them in your box? Do you dry box before you smoke?

Re: Wrapper Splitting while smoking

salt calibrated hydrometer never goes above 70...and they went into the humi a few months ago...however I did have to freeze them due to a beetle infection in some other cigars, that was a week ago

Re: Wrapper Splitting while smoking

My guess is that when you froze them they were probably overly humid. When the moisture froze it swelled and split the binder which you couldn't see, and was then a disaster waiting to happen. Nothing you could have done at that point.

Or accept the fact that some cigars will split for no particular reason whatsover. I have cigars that will do that every once in awhile and they are all kept at the same humidity. Don't sweat it,,,smoke it and enjoy it.

Very true. Being handmade, some cigars are just rolled too tightly.

Re: Wrapper Splitting while smoking

I bought a bundle of FDO Corojo Torpedos and a bundle of Nic 3000 Toros. The first two cigars out of each bundle did the same thing; smoked ok but split. I think they were stored at a higher humidity than the 65RH I store them at. The inside seem to be more moist than the outside and they swelled a bit and split the wrapper. Once they rested awhile it was no longer a problem

This is true.

Another part of the equation could be that your smoking to fast. Moisture builds up behind the "cherry" causing the wrapper to start bulging. If this continues, the pressure on the wrapper it will cause it to split. It's happened to me, maybe your experiencing the same.

I was smoking a cheapo Tabamex the other day and watched it swell as i smoked it. It looked cool so i kept puffing and puffing and ruined the smoke!! Well......if thats possible to ruin something thats already pretty crappy.

Re: Wrapper Splitting while smoking

I put the flame to a 5 Vegas Classic tonight and the damn thing split right away!

First cigar that did that to me out of the humidor...I'm calling it a fluke. But it was a bad omen...not that great a cigar tonight.

Re: Wrapper Splitting while smoking

Over humidification is the most likely cause. Combustion creates moisture and usually splits the wrapper about an inch in from the foot.

Re: Wrapper Splitting while smoking

Happened to me last night while smoking a El Rico Habano and my Humi's don't go above 65/65 as 70 RH to me is over humidified. Sometimes it just happens.

Re: Wrapper Splitting while smoking

A trick that has worked a few times this has happened:
Rub the cigar band a bit so it becomes loose so you can move it up and down the cigar. Move the band to where the splitting starts. Keep an eye on the cherry, and just keep moving the band back.

If you're lucky, at some point the cigar will have burned past that nasty splitting and you can move the band back to the original location. It's not the greatest trick in the world, but it works for me!
