Help me understand why you would buy more than one brand

I'll be the first to admit that my palette and experience is clearly in the 'minnow' stage.

However, in my 20 years of smoking, I believe I've smoked some of the highest rated sticks on the planet. Most from Upmann, Monte, Hoyo, Romeo & J, Cohiba, Partagas, the Miami Gloria (anyone remember their torpedo from the early '90's?) and others.

There's nothing more disappointing than a mediocre smoke. And I've had my fair share of those.

In the last couple days, I've had some fairly highly rated sticks that were simply disappointing. Partagas D No. 4, Upmann No. 2, Monte edmundo and Monte No. 4. Some of these, I haven't even finished.

After each, I've sparked up a Cohiba, either a Robusto, Siglo VI or IV. Every one, without exception, has been sublime. Perfect construction, creamy smooth perfect draw with a cloud of deliciously aromatic smoke. Especially the larger ring gauges. I smoke 'em til my fingers burn. Finishing one just makes me want to light another.

What am I missing? Is my palette unrefined? Or should I just stop other brands? Perhaps it's the extreme mild profile of the Cohiba?

Hey man, you smoke what appeals to you. Many people like to have a variety of smokes that can match the mood they are in. Sometimes I like one stick, while at another time I want something else...

Re: Help me understand why you would buy more than one brand

Nice daytona.

I'm starting to buy more boxes of the same cigar and generally experimenting much less than I have in the past. I will never smoke only one cigar simply because I prefer more med bodied stuff for breakfast and heavier smokes thereafter. There may be other times when I want a smoke but know I may have to chuck it before I finish it due to time constraints. Doesn't make sense to waste an expensive stick for this purpose.

All in all, I could smoke maybe 4-5 different sticks and be perfectly happy.

variety is the spice of life...... from what i've been told from the people who have been smoking a long long long long time there are a ton of quality cigars out there now than in the past.. might as well take advantage of it. Plus I need a cigar for whatever mood I'm in.. I just like variety

Seems something about gold Rolexes and Cohibas draws them together.

Re: Help me understand why you would buy more than one brand

I like to have a variety to choose from. I find it boring to smoke the same smokes all the time. I quite enjoy the whole process of going through my humi looking for the "Right" smoke of the moment!

If you are talking only CCs, aging matters. Cuba uses every quality scrap of tobacco available, and ships them before they are fully fermented to meet demand, you have to finish the job for them. That said, smoke what you like, I do.

Variety is the spice of life. Having a nice steak for every meal would get boring after two days for me, just like smoking only one type of cigar. How often do you smoke cigars, if it is just one a week I could maybe understand.

Smoke what you like! If you only like Cohiba then smoke only Cohiba. Like what was said above I love some red meat! But to eat it and only it everyday would sooner or later get old. I want some chicken wings too!

Re: Help me understand why you would buy more than one brand

I like lots of cigars and go through phases. When i get tired of one got to another then back to the first after some age and then it tasted different anyway so the process starts all over.

Re: Help me understand why you would buy more than one brand

I like smoking a variety of sizes, strength, and flavors. It is like going to different restaurants for the variety instead of just the one place with the perfect meal. Even when you get an inferior smoke, it a worthwhile experience. I try to figure out what it is I do not like, and decide if time in the humidor will fix it if I have more of the same cigar.

I also keep a variety for monetary reasons. I really enjoy quality goods, but I also know I can not afford to smoke $400 worth of my favorite cigars every month. So I am on a constant search for a great $2 cigar, and I still try $1 cigars when others say they are promising. But I still buy $200 boxes occasionally of favorites, intermixed with $40 bundles and everything in-between.

A great way for you to try out new cigars is to order some of the samplers available online. But age anything you get for a month in your humidor before smoking for the best chance of having a great smoke. Recently I have been on a sampler kick to try out many of these newer blends.
