Ever grab the wrong stick?
After a real crappy day at the office, you know the kind where you have to stop on the way home for liquid fortification. The wife was driving so I made her stop so I could pick up a tall boy. I decided to treat myself to a nice smoke when I got home.
So after a cocktail while I was grilling the chicken, and another for dinner, I decided I would water the yard by hand while I had my smoke. Now I have been doing that every other day for a month since we have had a drought. Since it isn't hard yard work, I usually smoke a mid range stick, RP 90 or IT Super Fuerte while I have been doing this. But since I had promised myself a nice cigar, I by passed the everyday humi and went to the one with my good smokes. At first I eyed an Olive V I had picked in the recent Toro Toro Tore pass, but as it had only rested 3 weeks since it's journey, so I decided to let it sleep a little longer. My hand drifted to a La Riqueza which was one of three I picked up about 6 months ago. I had smoked one right away and fell in love. I thought about it for a moment and said to myself "Do I want to really smoke this watering the yard?" and put it back down. After about another minute of deciding, I said what the heck why not, and reached to pick it up. Well when I went outside to light up and start my chore I started thinking about work again as I cut the cigar. I didn't even notice that the stick didn't have the slight box press the La Riqueza is supposed to have. After about a half an inch I thought this doesn't have the flavor profile I remembered and took a long look at the band. Imagine my surprise when I didn't see the band I was expecting but instead saw a Fuente Anejo band instead. This was a stick I've had for about 1 1/2 years waiting for the right moment, and here I was smoking a $20 beauty watering the lawn in 90 degree heat. ![]() That shook me out of my stupor and made me realiize that I needed to concentrate on what I was smoking and not on my crappy day. From that moment on I was in smokers bliss, and it turned out to be a great evening after all. I guess it just goes to show that no matter what your conscious mind thinks it knows what it needs, your subconscious will actually show you the way. I will definetly remember how this wonderful cigar went up in smoke, and will be glad that it was able to turn a bad day into a great day. Now I just need to go out and get a replacement for that little fellow ![]() |
