Question Box Press

Does anybody smoke this shape of cigar regularly? (specifically the ones where they do it on purpose.) If you do why? I'm just curious as to why these would be different and/or better then regular old-fashioned round cigars. To me it has always seemed like it would be a bad thing, cause you would think it means they didn't care enough to package them carefully, but that was just my assumptions.

Re: Box Press

I love box pressed cigars. They are just fun to smoke. It is done in a very specific mold and it takes a lot of prep work to not damage the cigars during the process, so I don't see where you get the 'not packed carefully'.

Some great box pressed cigars are La Riquezas, CAO Italias, some of the Oliva line, Padron anniversarys etc. It's just a different shape, you'll either like it or you won't.

Re: Box Press

I prefer the feel of cigars in the round, but I do occasionally smoke box-pressed if they are tasty. Currently some of the ones in my humi which I consider staples include: 601 Blue label, and
Oliva Serie G Maduro Belicoso.

Re: Box Press

I'm not a huge fan of them. But they're just another size to try out. It's surprising how much different the same blend can taste in different sizes or by box-pressing.

Re: Box Press

i love the box press, ive always had better experiences with the draw and construction. Padron Anni uses the box press and rocky patel uses it on his vintage and decade lines. Plus the box press is just a change of pace, it feels different on your lips and i tend to like the feeling.

Re: Box Press

I too love box pressed cigars. If a certain line has a vitola that is box pressed I usually get the box pressed. I agree with Steven ^^ Personally, I've found that box pressed cigars draw perfectly 95% of the time, whereas with round cigars I'll often come across ones that are too jammed packed with tobacco and rolled too tight. I also prefer the feel of box pressed to hold. It feels more natural for me. And, you can set them down on the edge of a table without them rolling off.

Don't get me wrong, I still love and smoke plenty of regular round cigars. But if there's the option I'll always prefer box pressed.

Re: Box Press

Not I. I don't like the feel of the box press cigars. I like ROUND, but I guess it's a personal thing.

Re: Box Press

I like a box press. 5 Vegas Gold is great in a BP. So is CAO Brazilia. Just my cents.

Re: Box Press

Call me apathathetic, but I really don't much care. I just smoke the cigar, for the cigar. I love the PAM 64, Oliva MB3 double robusto and the Anejo Shark. They all happen to be box pressed, but my preference is for the flavor, not the shape. The only box press I don't like is square pressed. They just don't feel good in my mouth. The rectangles are fine.

Re: Box Press

I am becomming more and more fond of the box press. It has influence on the flavors of the cigar to a degree.

Re: Box Press

I tend to press on a box while smoking a round cigar.
It confuses people.

+1 on above!

(Next thing you guys will be discussing is how pretty the label is...and that it matches your shoes perfectly. I think it brings out the color of my eyes, personally. )

Re: Box Press

Carlos Torano makes an economy brand called The Brick. They are "extremely" box pressed. This means they are dang near flat. It's a good smoke for the money. One of my favorite value smokes, but it is an odd shape and takes a little getting used to but it is good.

Re: Box Press

I smoke more round, but there are more round then box pressed anyway. I guess if it was two cigars the same band and same size I would prob grab the round instead of the BP just because I like the feel better.

There are two types of box press. Yes there are some that they use molds for and they have (sharp) edges, very defined, then there are some that are truly box pressed. They stuff the box and close the lid and the cigars get pressed against each other and the box.
