Ash length is just a game we play and really has nothing to do with the flavor of the cigar, nor particularly (as I once believed) indicative of construction quality. I've come to realize that the story of construction is mostly told by the burn. I do like to keep some ash on the cherry, since it seems to better regulate and dissipate heat. After I ash, I will generally tug more lightly and less frequently until the cherry is completely covered in ash.
