Re: 1st box ever
Don't make this too hard. You don't say what size humidor you have, so will assume it is a desktop of not too large proportions. Put a sponge soaked in distilled water on a saucer in the bottom of it. Put in a decent digital hygrometer, I recommend a Western Caliber III. I have twelve of them, and tested the first eight, and they were all within two percent of dead on. I don't test them any more. Keep a soaked sponge in there until humidity get around the desired range, then take it out, and put in cigars. The humidity may shoot up for a day or so. It's not wet cigars, it is the reduced volume of air that has to be humidified, and will settle down in a day or so, or may even drop, as the cigars start to absorb moisture.
Freeze Cubans or any cigars from small boutique makers. CCs are the highest risk. Take what local B&M employees tell you with a grain of salt. Most I have talked to are not well informed, and usually have an ax to grind, ie selling the highest profit margin product. Enjoy your cigars. |

Re: 1st box ever
OK, I think I've finally got this humidor thing pointed in the right direction. Yes, as, Phantom57 suspected, it is a small (50 ct) desktop. It came with a cheap plastic hygro that I thought I had calibrated correctly (according to instructions) but it was reading too low by about 10%. Purchased a digital a couple of days ago and discovered the error. I could tell by the bitterness and feel that my 'gars were getting too moist, now that the humidification issue is (I hope) ironed out, the only thing left is to let my sticks settle in to their new, slightly more arid digs and then...enjoy!
I'll be posting another topic in a few minutes re: the over humidified 'gars. |
