So if I like.....#2

I am 2 months into this vice and need some direction. I have been buying and burning lots of singles from my local shop and so far have really enjoyed Oliva Serie G and Rocky Patel Sun Grown. Any reccomendations on where to go from here? I have tried going by some of the reviews but they seem?? to be heavily biased to the high octane stuff.

My opinion would be to keep buying singles/samplers until you find the kind of stuff you like. I have been smoking for a few years now and I still like many stronger/milder cigars depending on my mood. Usually the stronger stuff as you mentioned but the best thing you can do is just keep smoking till you find what fits you.

Re: So if I like.....#2

Agreed,,,,you will be better off buying 5 paks and samplers until your taste buds decide what cigar suits you best. You will come upon several that will really catch your tastes and I would advise you to take notes on what you smoke so that you will be able to remember what really impressed you. Cigars are a journey where you find your tastes will change about every 6 months.

Greetings Arfele...if you like the Olivia O, try their G & V series all very good. I have not ventured into Rocky's offerings, so can't suggest other RP's. I'm also a big Punch fan, never been disappointed with them. CAO has some very good cigars as well, I especially like the CAO Brazil Gol!...yummy. Another good one to try is the Padron 3000. Happy searching.

Hey Rob...

I'm with the guys who say... keep trying other stuff & getting the samplers.

Since your new you'll find it seems like every 1 you try & like, you'll find 2 more that will blow that one away.

Keep at it!!! Heck... Half the fun of smoking is trying new things IMO.

Re: So if I like.....#2

I agree, keep buying singles and samplers and you will figure out what flavor profile you like. I would also suggest that you try more than one of each because your taste can be influenced by many things so a cigar you do not like today you may enjoy tommorow.

Like Gary said, take notes of the cigars you smoke so that you will know which ones impressed you and which ones didn't. I would also recommend keeping the bands of the ones you like so you will have a reference. You can also take the bands to the B&M with you and your shopkeeper should be able to help you select some things close to the ones you like.

Happy Hunting!

Re: So if I like.....#2

Try the Padron x000 Line.

Comes in both Maduro and Nat. and the Padron 2000 is probably one of the most consistent cigars out there.

I am not a real fan of Rocky Patle but there are alot of people who love his stuff.

Punch and Romeo y Juliet can also be a good starting place.

One of the most over looked Don Tomas..good cheap sticks...maduro a little spicer than the Nat.

Good Luck!

Shawn

Many prefer the Cameroon wrappers best on Don Tomas. Also try the Arturo Fuentes with sun grown wrappers, since you like the RP SG. And try Tatuaje.

  • Rocky Patel Vintage 1990 & 1992
  • Arturo Fuente Don Carlos
  • C.A.O. Italia, Cameroon, & Brazilia
  • Perdomo Lot23
  • Carlos Torano Casa Torano
  • Romeo y Julieta 1875 "Bully"
and by all means try the rest of the Oliva line. Great cigars. Enjoy!

When I first opened this thread, I thought it was about something else......

Looks like you have some great advice from everyone. When I'm in the mood to try some singles, I usually either buy a few on CBid or Cigarsinternational has a create-your-own sampler thingy & a bunch of cool pre-arranged samplers.

Re: So if I like.....#2

I've been at this for years, but evenso, most of my inventory is in singles and 5rs. I just love trying new stuff and revisiting old friends. If something's really spectacular, I'll buy the odd box here and there, but mostly I just want to be sure I have a few of my favorites in my humi at all times.

In addition to the great suggestions above, I'd recommend trying the Cusano 18yr Paired Maduro and Conneticut. Absolutely fantastic and a fantastic value... at least until Davidoff decides to double the price.

Another sleeper is the 1888 by Villager. An absolute yumm stick and very reasonably priced.

As a 48 year old, let me tell, there are few things better than a great No. 2, but that's a different discussion.

As a fellow relative noob, compared to many of these guys, I'd get as many samplers from as many marqes as possible. A great way to develop your pallette and refine your likes and dislikes.

This is a very good suggestion! You will probably enjoy these very much. I also agree with Shawn when he suggested the Padron "thousand series". Try the 2000 or 3000! Enjoy...

Re: So if I like.....#2

Try everything you can! Ive been at this for the same abount of time you have, and probaly have over 45 diferent cigars smoked. Ive only smoked the same cigar twice 2 times.

Youll find you "like" alot of the stuff you try, but then youll find a few that will knock your socks off!

My current favortives are

Pinar del Rio Oscuro
Rocky Patel OWR,Decade, connecticut
CAO Italia and Brazilia
Oliva "V" ( this smoke rocks! )

this is the sampler i was recomended when i first started out ...Covers a good deal of the RP line... its a pretty good deal and you can get free shipping if you look around this site a bit...

Re: So if I like.....#2

I find that my tastes jumps around some. I really like the dark maduros but I also like some of the lighter ones. Two that come to mind are the Romeo y Julieta Reserva Real and the Oliva Connecticut. Both are very smooth. I've been buying both in 5 packs torpedo.
From someone who is also fairly new to cigars but an old hand at pipes (both the musical and the smoking kind!).
