Recommendations for a newbie who likes 'em dark?

OK, so I really liked the Old World Reserve Maduro I smoked last week, and I'm realizing that a)I should not have started at the top, because b)it's too expensive!

Can anyone recommend a cigar that's similar in taste and style? I really like the overall flavor and taste, and the way it smoked. I'm looking for something similar, but in the $5 range.

I really like darker cigars - I prefer the "sweetness" of them (not sugary, but something I can't quite identify) over the lighter cigars. I liken it to enjoying a porter over an amber or even a stout, and I really like the fullness of the darker cigars.

So help me out! Any suggestions?

Based on the flavor profile, this might be worth a look-see......

Indian Tabac Tomahawk Maduro . I was bombed one of these by Rev2010, otherwise would never have smoked one. Indian Tabac was Rocky's first effort and that maduro is right up your alley. It's no OWRM, but for $2.40 a stick, it's amazing.

I'm with you on the Porter. By far my favorite beer style. You'll taste some similarities with the Tomahawk. In fact, I'd say to pair the two. Likely a match made in heaven.

Another great one is The Edge by Rocky Patel maduros. If you buy by the box, you can get them well under $5 and I actually prefer it over the OWRM.

If you haven't shopped cbid yet, thats where you can score some smokin' deals. As for inexpensive maduros, my favorite is the Oliva Serie G maduro. (I like the belicoso vitola too). They do better with a little age on them. The first time I tried one, I bought 10, and the first was only ok. But, after several months of time in the humi, they got much smoother. The C.A.O. Brazilia line is also an exceptional maduro.

The cigar that got me started and one I still enjoy smoking is the Partagas Black Label.

I'm a big fan of CuAvanna Maduro's and they usually go for about $1.50 a stick on Cbid. I would highly suggest the 5 Vegas Series A. They can also be had for pretty cheap. Also, as Rubix3 mentioned, make sure to check out the CAO Brazilia, it's my go to smoke. 2 Eric's can't be wrong.

With all brotherly respect, the CAO Brazi's are nothing like the OWRM. Are you trying to blow his face off, Eric? Don't get me wrong, I love 'em, but he did say he was kinda new at this.

Then again, I was the guy who recommended The Edge, wasn't I?

Re: Recommendations for a newbie who likes 'em dark?

I thought the Brazil was mid to mid-full, the one that I smoked didn't beat me up. Definitely not compared to the Edge Never had the old world maduro, so I don't know what to compare it to, but I'm a newbie and I also like maduros quite a bit, the three that I like who won't break the bank are Arturo Fuente Exqusitios, AFuente curly head deluxe maduros and Onyx Reserve.

The two AF smokes I mentioned run me less than $3 at the local B&M, and the Onyx runs $5-$6 at the same place. All can be had for less online. I just bought a box of 20 Onyx's from Famous for $55 plus shipping, but I got free shipping on the deal since I bought it with a cigar monster buy.

Re: Recommendations for a newbie who likes 'em dark?

While I love the C.A.O. Brazilia line and the Partagas Black Label, I don't think I'd recommend either to someone who is fairly new to the hobby. I think the Perdomo Lot 23 Maduros might be more appropriate, a really tasty medium bodied cigar that runs $4.25 to $5.00 per stick by the box, depending on the size, and right around $5.00 per stick by the 5 pack.

Oops.
While I still recommend trying the Brazilia, The Lot23 maduro is milder, slightly cheaper, and still yummy. Also, back when I was a newb I got my hands on a couple Avo maduro. Now it was expensive (though like anything, deals can be found), but it is one creamy smooooth smoke.

Re: Recommendations for a newbie who likes 'em dark?

On that note, what about the CAO Gold Maduro? Mild to medium and everso yummy.

Another thing to consider, if you really like the sweet maduro taste, dont buy big vitolas. They tend to drown out the wrapper and most of what you taste will be filler. Stick with 44-50rg for a spell.

5 Vegas A Series, Taboo Special Forces or Boot Camps are delicious "dark" smokes...and easy on the pocket.

I would go with the El rey Del mundo Robusto largo, ad I agree the oliva series g is a good choice. These are very good and very cheap prices.
