Opus X - where to start?

my 33rd birthday is coming up, and I think it's time to take the plunge and see what all this Opus X hype is all about .. but where to start?? below is a list of the Opus X sizes that are available to me in Europe ..

Perfexcion no 4 (box of 4 = $75)
Perfexcion no 5 (box of 4 = $62)
Reserva 1992 Belicoso xxx (one cigar = $32)
Reserva 1992 Fuente Fuente (one cigar = $32)
Reserva 1992 Petite Lancero (one cigar = $35)
Reserva 1992 Reserve d'Chateau (one cigar = $45)
Corona (one cigar = $32)
Perfexion X (one cigar = $43)

as you can see, the prices in Europe are pretty steep .. I prefer bigger ring gauge cigars, so the no 5 is probably too small - (40 ring gauge right?)

thanks guys!

Re: Opus X - where to start?

I recommend Perfexion X..comes nicely wrapped in cedar. And maybe wait until around November when Opus is replenished in cigar shops. Shop around; Price seem on the high side.

Re: Opus X - where to start?

Since youre paying through the nose for them, I'd recommend the #4. It gives all the Opus character and since youre getting a box of 4, you can let the remaining 3 age a little. Frankly, I don't find anything special about a fresh Opus and to me, they're a bit of a let down. With some age on them, they become one of the finest cigars I've ever smoked.

All things being equal however, I'd go with the Perfexion X.

Re: Opus X - where to start?

Id go with the perfexcion no.4

this vitola is made for this cigar. everything from the cedar wrap to the fantastic wrapper to filler ratio. its a full bodied 5.1 x 42 that burns slow. i got almost two hours out of it. no burn problems. if you take your time, this vitola is the best one for the OpusX.

i second the call for a bit of age. there is a world of difference from a fresh Opus to an Opus with even just a year on it. 2+ is even better.

Re: Opus X - where to start?

thanks for the input everyone, I guess I'll smoke an Opus X next year, since I turn 33 on tuesday not much time for aging then .. and I'm still not convinced the Opus X is worth the money, considering there are so many aged cubans available throughout Europe, and for a fraction of the price .. hmm, decisions decisions ..

Re: Opus X - where to start?

Just found a 5-pack of Fuente Fuente Opus X Belicoso XXX for around $106 .. not including shipping, but is this a reasonable price for the Opus?

Re: Opus X - where to start?

well, I ended up ordering 3x Montecristo #2, 4x Ashton VSG Robustos and 4x Arturo Fuente Epicure ..
all for the price of $6 more than I would have paid for 4 Opus X #4 .. all are good and tried smokes in my book

Dang, I wish this thread had been going on a month ago! lol...I picked up 3 of the Reserve d'Chateau for about $30 each...Plan to age for at least 2 years for the first one, 5yrs for the second one and possibly up to 10 yrs for the last one (I plan on finally being able to pay off my school loans by that time). Now, I'm worried that they won't be worth it since I picked the wrong size. Yes, I'm a NOOB! lol

i agree wit this. the no4 is my favorite for the above listed reasons. however, that does not mean it will be YOUR favorite. some people just like a robusto, or a toro....

reserve D'Chateau is still a good smoke. you will still get a good experience out of it. who knows, that my be your favorite size OpusX

Re: Opus X - where to start?

You think you got the prices bad? The Opus X range starts at $50each here. That just for a plan old robusto aswell.

Hell even a Arturo Fuente Don Carlos Robusto costs $27 each here. And Pardon Aniv Maduro 1964 start at about $30 a piece.

Re: Opus X - where to start?

Jimbo14, you must do a lot of importing of cigars then? is that a general thing, that cigars are so expensive Down Under? those prices are sick ..
