lighting a cigar using cedar
A lot of the cigars I have been buying lately have been wrapped in cedar.
I love the way it smells when its burning, so I have taken the rolled cedar, and it seems to crack naturally into sticks, in which I light the cedar wood, and then light my cigar. I love the smell. Is there something wrong doing it this way. I am not trying to be showy, I just love the smell of burning cedar. Much regards Jerry |

I have heard of others doing this... and enjoy the smell personally... but have never tried it. Do you notice any different flavor at all with the cigar doing it this way?

Re: lighting a cigar using cedar
Nah, my taste buds are not the most sensitive anymore. My nose is very keen. Actually I cant even tell the differnce like some people do, over a butane, match, truck lighter, candle or wood from the fireplace starting the smoke. It takes a good inch of burn on a cigar, before I can pick up on the taste.
I have always gone for medium or light medium smokes, and have ordered some darker, stronger smokes to play with. Much regards Jerry |

Do what makes you happy, this isn't a hobby where the rest of the world mandates your enjoyment. Though I know, there's a segment of the population out there that would like to!
Just stay out of CA and you should be fine. ![]() |

I take the blocks of cedar that come in some of the cigar boxes and saw them into cedar spills if only they were more flammable they would be marvelous!

I like it as well. Dunhill makes, or at least they did a long time ago, long matches made out of cedar.
Oh, and there is nothing wrong with being "showy".. |

Re: lighting a cigar using cedar
This is actually a really good query. Cedar strips are admittedly about the sexiest thing I've used to light a cigar. It just seems so earthy and primeval. Thing is, once something becomes flame, it ceases to be that thing and becomes simply... flame. Flame doesnt really care what creates it. Flame is its own thing. The medium does decide how hot the flame will be, but woods all burn within a pretty narrow temperature range. What you actually do care about is what, what doesnt burn does. The heated, but unburned oils of cedar do export a rather pleasing nose. Some of these may be imparted to the cigar. This may enhance the first half inch or so, but after that, youre just tasting burning tobacco.
I still think it's sexy to light with a cedar strip now and again though. ![]()

Re: lighting a cigar using cedar
ACtually this is one of the better ways to light your cigar,,,I do it at home quite a bit. The fumes you get from the strip does enhance the cigar but not so much that you will jump up and down. It takes about 3 strips of cedar to really get your cigars going depending on RG. While using the strips you can draw on the cigar and that is how you will get more of the cedar scent into the cigar and I'd rather get cedar than gas, matches, sulphur, lighter fluid anyday.

Re: lighting a cigar using cedar
Squid® doesn't care for using cedar, as it doesn't burn all that well and changes the taste of the cigar. A torch lighter, toasting the end to a nice cherry gives the best light in my opinion. And naturally, I am right! HAW! <G>

Re: lighting a cigar using cedar
As long as you enjoy your cigar you can light it with a stale dry dog turd from the back yard. However you decide to light it that makes in enjoyable for you is the right way to do it. I wouldnt worry about being showy just enjoy it!
