How to cut a Belicoso

I have a few in my humidors now, but I have never smoked one, but the physics of it, seem to be sound.
Question I have is how far of a cut, should you do on one, expecially the ones that are really tapered down almost to a point.
Is it a matter of personal preference(I guess much of life is), or is there a preferred amount and if so why?

Much regards Jerry

Re: How to cut a Belicoso

I recommend a V - Cutter for a beginner. It sounds very counter-intuitive, but the result is great. I suggest everyone try it one time before you decide to write it off as idiocy.

This may not be the preffered method in high company, but it works great.

Re: How to cut a Belicoso

I have never actually measured, but I guess I usually take about 1/2" off. Take off a little at first and test the draw. If it is too firm, than you can cut off a little more. After some time it just becomes intuitive and you don't really have to think about it. Just be careful not to remove more than the cap wrapper, or you risk the cigar coming unraveled.

Re: How to cut a Belicoso

You want to cut enough off so you get adequate draw and smoke. To little and the draw an be restricted or may tighten up from tar.

Different brands of cigars vary.

In my opinion, The diameter where you cut deterimines the cut rather than how far from the end you cut.

I like a fuller cut so I usually cut further up (where the taper is about the diameter of a corona).

Everyone has different preferences.

Look up the "dickman cut" which is what I do, it's basically a 45 degree cut starting about 1/2 down the stick. It allows for more exposed surfacearea to draw the smoke through and it works great in my opinion.

This thread has been very helpful! I've always wondered what a good way would be to cut these cigars.

So the fact that I'm hardly able to get a true 90 degree cut (on any cigar) is not always a bad thing?

Re: How to cut a Belicoso

45 degree cut is an interesting idea but unless its a torpedo or beli it requires the cap to be cut through, so it is easier to unravel. ill give it a try though.

1/4" tops. Cut small take a draw. If too tight cut a tad larger and repeat until you are happy.

I agree with you,,,have been using a V Cut on just about any type of cigar,,including Belicoso, Torpedo, et al. When you use a V Cut you diminish the chance of a tar build up getting to your tongue,,,if anything it would stay in the groove and with a V Cut you are essentially directing the flow of smoke where it belongs.

If you use a regular cut it's better to cut off too little than too much.

Not to be a douche here but the thread question was how to cut a belicoso so I answered.

Yes Gary, I like using the term "dickman" any chance I get but supposedly, it's the true name of that style of cut. We gotta hang out bro!

Would me my pleasure Scott,,,anytime you and the family are in this neck of the woods you guys would have a place to stay and hang out,,,you can show me the proper way to cut my "dickman",,,lol. Actually, I have used this cut many times when I don't have my V Cutter available and I like the style. I did this years ago before it became popular and people thought I was nutts.

Re: How to cut a Belicoso

Agree with the smallest cut to get a good draw. It is also my experience that getting the tip of the cigar a little wet from smoking makes the draw harder especially in a beli that is packed full. Therefore I have to cut it several times during the smoke. The more real estate available the better.
