Lighting a cigar

Ok I am a newbie, and so far had two

an Acid Kuba Kuba, and just had a CAO Moontrance Petit Corona, I enjoyed the CAO Moontrance a lot better

But I had a really hard time lighting the CAO moontrance, also keeping it lit, at one point when I was tyring to relight I almost had a fire on my cigar..

Is there a video somewhere out there that shows a good tutorial on hwo to light a cigar evenly and how to keep it lit?

Thanks

Cigars International - Cigar 101 Look at the bottom of the page.

Cigar Lighting FAQ No video, but pretty self explanitory.

Cigars 101: Cutting and Lighting another good resource.

Hope these help you out.

Re: Lighting a cigar

ok i see what i was doing wrong....i was lighting it like a cigarette...because i am a smoker...

your not suppose to put it in your mouth and light it...your suppose to start your lighter, put the cigar and hold it over the flame like a marshmallow and then after a few minutes then you put it towards your mouth and puff...

Yeah, there's some science to it; I've read quite a few articles and even seen some videos explaining how to light a cigar. I spend a good minute toasting the hell out of the foot and getting an even ring torched around the end of the wrapper, until the entire foot gets a bit patchy with white ash. Then I blow through the cigar for a couple seconds to get any charred bits out of the tip before giving the stogie a solid draw while blasting with the torch for a second. Works like a charm every time. Makes for a nice, comforting pre-cigar ritual, too; kind of like stretching a bit before hopping in the pool.

Re: Lighting a cigar

No, you really don't have to toast the foot to get a cigar to light properly. I almost never do it, and have been smoking stogies almost forty years. Your cigar was probably wet.

Thats the first thing I thought. The romanace of lighting a cigar is nice, but not necessary to simply get it smokably lit. Your cigar was too moist.

Re: Lighting a cigar

Experiment with lighting a cigar you normally smoke so that you have the taste profile down. Try lighting it with your lighter full on while drawing. Next, light your cigar without letting the actual flame touch the foot while drawing on it. This will take some practice because it might be hard to guage if the flame is actually touching the foot. The idea is to let the heat of the flame light the cigar. Lastly, do not put the cigar to your mouth but rather hold the cigar at a 45 degree angle and let your torch ( lighter ) burn the foot of the cigar until it is cherry red and then blow on it until it is fully lit. At that point, put the cigar in your mouth and gently blow ( purge ) and then start drawing on the cigar. Chances are really good that you will notice how different the cigar tastes with each type of light and then choose the lighting method that gives you a more enjoyable smoke.

For a table lighter,

Perdomo Logo Vector Thundra

For a pocket lighter, Blazer Pocket Micro Torch PB-207

I have both and they work great.

Re: Lighting a cigar

Well just to update I ended up picking up the Ronson Torch flame lighter from Walmart for $3 and what a huge difference, makes it so much easier to light and I never have to let the flame hit the cigar

Though the last cigar I did smoke tonight the Pandron 2000 it did go out 3 times on me in the first few minutes, I think maybe becuase I was taking too long to puff, I read somewhere not too puff too fast or it will burn too hot, so was paranoid about that, but after a while I got in the rythym and rest was smooth sailing.

Anyway the torch flame works like a charm what a huge difference!!!! comapred to a bic

Thank you for the suggestion!

Re: Lighting a cigar

You beat me to it,,Ronson is my lighter of choice after having so many other premium lighters,,Colibri, Prometheus, etc. As long as you can get the foot cherry red you are well on your way to a great cigar.
