How long before I have to smoke it?
I do not own a humidor yet, and not sure when I will be able to buy one.
Here is my question right now I have been going to the store and just buying one cigar at a time when I know I will be able to smoke it within the hour or so. Is it possible to pick up maybe 2-3 at a time as long as I smoke them in a week? or is that too long to wait? What is my timeframe that I should smoke a cigar once I buy it from my local B&M and it is taken out of the humidor? Last question if I were to buy a tin of small cigars like cigarellos, like Al capones or CAO Moontrances do they also need to be stored in a humidor? Thanks |

Re: How long before I have to smoke it?
If you want to wait a week just put it in a sealed container like tupperwear. A good cheap alternative to a humidor is a tupperwear container with some cedar in it. Try to get an empty cigar box from the smoke shop for the cedar. That should buy you some time.

I was curious about this myself, I only buy like 4 or 5 at the most cause my humidor is small.

Re: How long before I have to smoke it?
Tupperware or a ziplock bag would work for temporary storage. You can even pickup packaged humidifiers like water pillows (may last up to 2-3 months and then replace with a new one) and use the tupperware as a longer term solution.

Re: How long before I have to smoke it?
If it is only going to be a week or so you could just put them in a Ziploc bag.
Any tins I have ever had I placed in the humidor.

Re: How long before I have to smoke it?
In the summer here in New England, I can leave cigars out in just a cigar box for months without ill effect. Except maybe they get overhumidified. This summer, its been brutal here with humidity (you know the saying, "its not the heat it's the humidity ...")
Now, a humidor is nice to prevent crazy swings in humidity and temp, which can't be good for your cigars. That's why I got an Edgestar. But for most of the summer my ambient humidity is too high where I live, not too low. This is a chart I found of avg Boston temp and humidity. I don't have air conditioning, so until I turn my heat on in the winter, the ambient conditions both inside and outside my house are pretty much the same I'd guess. Temp.(ºF) Relative Humidity (a.m. and p.m.) January 28.6 68% 58% February 30.3 68% 57% March 38.6 70% 57% April 48.1 69% 55% May 58.2 72% 60% June 67.7 73% 58% July 73.5 74% 57% August 71.9 77% 59% September 64.8 79% 60% October 54.8 77% 58% November 45.3 74% 59% December 33.6 70% 59% Annual 51.3 73% 58% |

Re: How long before I have to smoke it?
I understand (from that book I just read) that cigarillos are made of cured tobacco and do not require humidification. It shouldn't hurt them to be in your humidor, but they don't need to be there.

Re: How long before I have to smoke it?
All tobacco needs propper humidification. Even the lowly cigarette should not be allowed to dry out. A zippy bag or tupperware will work fine for a week or two.
