Exploding Cigar

Hi all. Newbie here with my first question.
When you light up a stick and the whole thing heaves and cracks and the outer wrapper comes off is it a problem with humidity or is it just a lousy cigar roll. Just lit up a JFR and the wrapper blew off and the butt of the cigar swelled up terribly. Not fun plus hate spending $$$ and have that happen.
Thanks in advance.

The best way to go is Humidity beads. You can find them at the link below.

Re: Exploding Cigar

This is interesting. I just had a Montecristo 'C' bulge and crack on me this evening. I was pissed, I paid top retail for it at the B&M.

The thing is, it's been in the humi for a month now and it's the 1st one I've had this problem with. I smoke a cigar out of that humi every day and all of the other ones have been fine. In fact, a friend smoked the cigar that was sitting next to the Monte tonight and his was fine....

I've had the same issue with this happening when I smoke Gurkha Fuerte Toros...Pain in the derriere and a waste of cash! I had mine stored at 65% RH for a month, and have smoked all of them in fairly hot weather (90's in the shade)...

What was the ambient humidity? If you are smoking a cigar stored at 65% - 70% in 90% humidity there is a very good chance you will get some swelling and cracking. Especially with the thinner wrappers such as Connecticuts.

hmmm... I didn't check the ambient humidity. Just figured it would be ok to stand outside and smoke the damn thing.

The other cigar was smoked within 10 feet of me and it didn't explode.

Re: Exploding Cigar

I have had a few do this in various manner. Bigger ring gauges primarily. I'm suspecting they are to humid at the shop and I'm not giving them enough time to balance out.

Re: Exploding Cigar

Half assed storage is at fault. Cigars want their atmosphere to be consistant. Start dragging em in and out of humidity, or sitting around some boat dock or back room for awhile and you get that drying outer leaf, moist core anomoly which results in your stogie exploding and your nice Connecticut shade wrapper curling in fragments to the floor of your car. Its a damned shame my local cigar dealer cant grasp that concept.
