Vacuum packed beetle babies?
Recently I read that some major manufacturers put their cigars that are ready for shipment in a big room and suck all the air out of it. Evidently the resulting depressurization causes any beetle eggs to explode or something...anyway, it kills them. I've got one of those Foodsaver vacuum packing devices, and I know that they make vacuum sealing jars to go with it. I wonder if the suction on such a machine is strong enough to produce the same results at home? Anybody have any thoughts/experience with that approach?
Thanks, Rod |

Re: Vacuum packed beetle babies?
As long as you can create a fully depressurized environment then it sounds like a good idea. Pick up a manometer and see exactly what the pressure is inside of the jar.

Never heard of them using that.

If you are worried about it then I would take the time and go through the freezing process.

Re: Vacuum packed beetle babies?
Not particularly worried about it, just interested in the technology, and see it as potentially less damaging to the cigars than freezing. Thanks for the advice on the manometer, I never would've come up with the name for that one off the top of my head! I know I need to research this more to have a good understanding of the physics involved, and I will, if I decide to experiment with this approach. If it works though, logically, I'd think it would be much quicker than freezing without all the moisture issues that freezing brings to the table, yes?

I have never had a beetle problem and I have been smoking for 5 years now.

Re: Vacuum packed beetle babies?
I don't think it would hurt your sticks, so long as you only use the vacuum canisters...no bags.
I doubt it will do that much to fight beetles. It shouldn't affect the tobacco, since all of the cell walls are broken down from fermentation. |

Have never heard of that one. Have read that Cubans regularly use insecticides, and now freeze also. Reportedly they have tried microwaving with little success. I have been smoking cigars almost forty years, and have had two outbreaks of beetles, both from Cubans.
