How long should these rest?
I've never had an Opus X and I recently picked up a couple from cigars.com, (robusto). Considering the price, ($34), I want to make sure I don't smoke them too soon. What is the minimum length of time I should allow them to sit before sparking one up?

Re: How long should these rest?
I know I am in the minority but I prefer fresh Opus X. I feel that they lose quite a bit after about 3 years.

They have a different flavor profile after a few years. I love them new. I love them old. Just different. Most of the ones I have are from 04 I believe they have mellowed. Smoke one now (after they have sat for a few days from transit shock) and smoke another in a couple years.

Re: How long should these rest?
They can rest quite nicely in my humidor and when they are ready I can let you know via pictures. LOL. I would say after a year smoke them as a special occasion.

Re: How long should these rest?
Give them a minimum of a month just to get to a stable humidity level. I've stopped smoking "new" sticks, as is is very hard to find a B&M that has good rH in their humidor. And when you ship them, they can be subjected to all kinds of hash treatment as well.
After a month in a stable humidor, they should be RESTED enough to enjoy. Nothing worse than smoking a wet/plugged Opus. What a waste. Lately, I haven't smoked anything that hasn't rested for a t least 6 months. As for aging, that's purely subjectiive. Some like 'em strong, and others like 'em mellow. Try a young one and see how you like it. If you can't get more than 1/3 through it, you should let them age. |

Re: How long should these rest?
Good to know. I have only smoked 1 Opus in my days and it had approx 5 years on it. The cigar was ok and that's it. Perhaps I should try one with only a few months on it.

Re: How long should these rest?
Having smoked a ton of these in the last 10 years and understanding their profile I tend to think they are at their peak around a years time. They can be a very full bodied ( strength ) cigar for somebody who isn't used to them and they can do a number on you. I have smoked them within a couple of weeks and while they are good even then they are a bit "green" and you will sense that in the first 5 minutes. If you can wait for at least a couple of months they will be even better. At the end of the day it's what you like,,,so experiment and if you can afford them then try them at different time time intervals,,,1 month, 3 months, 6 months and then a year.
