Question Boxes of Cigars

Usually I buy my sticks indivudually from the local store, but the store owner in the college town I live in is quite an ass, so I made the executive decision to buy a box of cigars. How long will those last in the box themselves? I don't have a humidor per-say, it's what I call a "cool-idor" it's a water cooler, like the ones football players dump on the coaches but smaller, and I have humidification beads, and cedar in it. I'm going to put a few in there (it could fit about a dozen). As for the rest, should I leave them in the box, or should I invest in a larger cooler, like one you would use to keep your beer cold tailgating?

As long as it's air tight, it should work just fine. There are lots of people around here who store cigars in bulk in cooli-dors.

Re: Boxes of Cigars

I keep two boxes of my daily smokes(I smoke one of each a day), in the cedar box that they come in. I put a drymistat in each one, but with a light soak of d.w. It keept the smokes just fine for the 20 days or so. I keep a digital hygrometer in each box, and I have no problem with them. In fact I think they smoke better that way, then putting into humidor. Of course they are not aging at all, and I do plan on rectifying this situation with a very large humidor in the near future.

Good luck, Jerry

Re: Boxes of Cigars

For you overflow, you can use a ziplock bag or rubbermaid container. Throw in some beads or a boveda pack and your're good indefinitely.

The boxes aren't built to tolerance and don't make a very good humidors. Although, you could probably fit it into a gallon freezer bag with some humidification and be very happy.

Re: Boxes of Cigars

I thought this explanation on aging was pretty informative.
