Don Pepin Garcia Black Label

So I've heard more than a few times that the Don Pepin Black Label is the closest you can get to a Cuban flavor profile from a NC. As many of you know, certain vitolas may have a different flavor profile even though they are the same cigar.

My questions are:

What is your favorite vitola for this cigar?

Has anyone had the perfecto (1973)? How did it compare to the others?

In my opinion, the Perla (Petit Corona) is the best of this line.

Re: Don Pepin Garcia Black Label

I've gone through boxes I mean BOXES of 1950's. They are my favourite go to smoke. But to clarify, I prefer to smoke CC's. I can see were a comparison can be made to Cubans but let's be real here. It not a Cuban. Doesn't matter. I still love 'em. One dimensional compared to a Cuban, but a dimension that I love.

Re: Don Pepin Garcia Black Label

I have only had the robusto, but it is a fine smoke. I also enjoy Pepin's Serie JJ Maduro, and the cigars he blends for 601, as well as the La Aroma de Cuba Edicion Especial.
If you like the Black label, a non Pepin smoke that you may enjoy is the Padilla 1932.

Cheers!

The more I smoke, the more I'm drawn to thinner ring gauge cigars, petite corona, corona etc.

I've never actually smoked any Pepins, Black Label, Blue Label (which I heard is very good), but I hear he is a master blender and that his creations are really tasty. So far it sounds like you can't go wrong with any vitola of this cigar. So I guess I'll try the petite corona and toro soon. Still waiting for someone who's tried the perfecto. I don't know why, but I love the shape of those things, reminds me of a Hemingway short story, except on roids.

I've also been getting into small rg cigars lately, they just have more flavor as a general rule. Plus most cigars are blended for coronas, so that's usually a good place to start when trying out a blend.

You should try some pepins, I'm a relative noob to them, but every one I've tried has been excellent. I have a black label in the humi (robusto I think) that I'll be smoking soon.

I heard that DPG said his brown label Tatuaje is the closest thing to a Cuban? I don't think I've ever heard the same about the cuban classic.

Re: Don Pepin Garcia Black Label

Had the Robusto 1979 this morning. Very similar to a Cuban in flavor profile.

Even if you don't care about it tasting like a Cuban, this cigar is among the best out there in my opinion.

Re: Don Pepin Garcia Black Label

I've had the Toro, Robusto and Belicoso. All great smokes. Heavy wood and pepper flavors, but they don't taste like Habanos to me.

I personally think the Cabaiguan Belicoso has a closer profile to a Habano than the Black line.

Prefer the toro gordo in the black label. Great smoke for the price but definitely not a cc.

Re: Don Pepin Garcia Black Label

In the black label, I prefer the 1970 (belicoso). I saw a video interview of DPG on another BB where he says the Tatuaje Regios is the closest thing he has ever made to a CC.
