Can a cigar with mold still be aged?

Hi Guys,

I received some Cohiba Robustos today and 5 out of the 6 have mold. Yes, it's mold not plume, a handful of white spots at random on the wrapper. I don't have enough posts to post pics just yet.

None of the mold is on the foot at all which from what I have read is a best case scenario for mold.

My question is then, once I have thoroughly brushed off the mold can I then put them in my humi and let them continue to age or should I smoke them asap?

I have a 25 count humi set aside just for my Cubans with only 10 or so other cigars in there. The humi sits at around 65-68% rh. Will these cigars be at risk even though the Cohibas have been 'cleaned'?

Thanks for any help you can provide.

Tim

I would wipe the mold off and then store the sticks in a Tupperware dish for a while. If no mold regrows then place them into your regular humi.

I would question your source as to why they gave you sticks with mold on them. I agree with Donnie that you should store them away from the rest of the sticks for at least a couple of weeks and see what happens to the mold.

My international source has told me since viewing my photos that what I have is plume but it would have to be the most localised and intense plume in the history of cigars.

Lesson learned: get them to open the boxes/packets before they are sent and inspect them.

Re: Can a cigar with mold still be aged?

I've always been happy to see when international suppliers open their boxes / packages before shipping. No surprises on the condition of the smokes.

Cheers,
Brad

I really don't care that much about the inspection. I have seen cigars from various vendors that had a liitle bit of mold. My main concern is the vendors response.

If I tell my vendors i have a problem of any type we will work together to remedy the situation or they will reship with no questions asked.

Also, unless you were buying some seriously aged stock then the vendor should know that the likelihood of them having plume was very slim.

Re: Can a cigar with mold still be aged?

My experience is if you have mold, no amount of cleaning the cigar up is going to get rid of it.
