Sick Fuente Taste Problems

I really want to like an Arturo Fuente cigar but I keep running into the same problem. They usually seem to have this same taste that I can't quite say what it is that turns me off. At first I thought the two I smoked that had this similiar taste were the result of poor keeping by the store. Than I smoked a short story I liked and was told maybe it was the Cameroon taste.

Fast forward to today. I bought a Hemmingway maduro. I prefer a maduro cigar most of the time. I love that cocca flavor and strength they provide. Anyway, I take it out and it looks like a really long short story without the fat end. I light it up and the first 2 inches of the cigar are vaguely sweet, no real maduro taste, and very light. Suddenly, I get that burst of flavor that I only find in the Fuente cigars and it just turns me off. It always gets me right on the front of my tongue and the roof of the mouth. It almost reminds me of the way I expect chewing a bunch of fresh pine needles would taste or even like a stale menthol cigar tastes. I unfortunatlely have to bail on the rest of the cigar because its SO unenjoyable to me. What a waste of ten bucks.

Does anyone know what the hell it is im tasting and what's causing this? I've only been smoking for 6 months and as I've described, this only occurs when I smoke Fuentes. I have 2 Anejos and an Opus x and I'm starting to dread that these "premium" lines may be just as bad as the rest.

TTT for ya I can't say I experienced any of what you are referring to. I would try an Anejo first and see how that is and then an Opus... They should be different from the standard Fuente's in my opinion... if they all have that same bad taste I would order some from a reputable dealer online and see if it still exits?

Re: Fuente Taste Problems

Chalk it up to what your taste buds are telling you. Some people either like them or they don't. The beauty is that you don't have to smoke what you don't prefer and after time you can go back and see if you like them or not. I did this with CAO cigars for a long time where when I smoked them I didn't see the draw. I did not like any of them at all and now I like them. Your taste will change,,,you will have preferences for one cigar over another but never let your taste keep you from trying others or coming back at a later time and trying again. I use to hate vegetables,,,now I love em. I use to hate Jazz,,,now I love it,,,,,,tastes change.

Re: Fuente Taste Problems

I agree taste change as you smoke longer. I started with Acid Blondies, thought they were the greatest thing, now I hate them. I smoke a lot of A. Fuentes and I don't know that I have experienced what you have. I keep some of the Maduro 858,Curly head Deluxe and Seleccion Privada's around. Maybe let what you have rest for awhile, just forget about them and go one to something else, come back in a month or 2 and see what you think then.

Ah well, it is what it is. I hope my Anejo's and my Opus I'm holding on to are better. I was just hoping someone who had the same experience could say, hey its because they dont use much secca tobacco or they have a unique cameroon binder or some bull hockey. I'm smoking a padron 2000 right now for my first smoke of the day after a nice breakfast wrap. I love football. Ha.

Re: Fuente Taste Problems

Why are you trying so hard to like something you don't like? Not to sound condescending, but it's okay not to like some cigars. You can't force your palate. It will change on it's own with time. I'm not sure what country grows the tobacco for Fuente, but maybe you should try maduros from another country? Come back to Fuente later, if you're not busy enjoying other brands.

Re: Fuente Taste Problems

Here's an update: I'm smoking one of my Anejos right now and I have to say by far this is the best Fuente I have smoked and one of the best cigars I have smoked and has totally lived up to the hype. I will now on just ignore all other Fuente products and continue my quest to have a smashing collection of Anejos although I'm now minus one. Ha.

I am not a fan of Fuente cigars. I find their regular line to be quite bland and tasteless. On their more upscale stuff they use gimmicks in my opinion. They use sweetend wrapper glue on a lot of their stuff, which really turns me off. In addition they flavor the wrapper of the Anejo by aging in cognac barrelsl. I have read they do the same with rum on the Opus. I just prefer pure tobacco.

Not trying to be confrontational, but what would sweetened glue do? The only place on the cigar glue is used is the cap.

I do get what you mean with the cognac barrels, though I wouldn't consider that a gimmick, personally.

Re: Fuente Taste Problems

IMO the Opus is by far the best Fuente, I enjoy some others, but a lot of them don't do much for me either. I wouldn't worry about it, just keep smoking those Anejos!

Re: Fuente Taste Problems

For my tastes, AF cigars are very good. I do like the opus x and anejos the best. The only time that I have found the fuentes not so good is when they were not taken care of very well.

The sweetened glue gives the cigar a sweet taste. On some of their cigars, you can hold them up to a light and see glue smears the length of the cigar.
