cigar molds mold

I purchased a few cigar molds for decoration in my smoking room. I hung them last year on the wall and noticed today that there is a great deal of mold growing on them. Why would this be and is there something that I could do to keep the mold from comming back after I clean them off?

Mold spores can lay dormant on/in a surface waiting for the right atmospheric conditions to grow.
Vinegar kills mold.
