Can't get past half way

Hey guys...

Loving this place...
Wish some of you lived this side of the world so I could meet you guys

Anyway...
Tried a few cigars and I stop enjoying it as I reach the half way point...
Anything from a cuban with a strength rating of 5 to a vasco de gamma of 1.

Long, short, at half way, I stop enjoying it and generally am finished.

Is there a reason with the cigars or has it something to do with the white self love jacket and padded room I should be in?

Do any of you experience this?

Re: Can't get past half way

Some smokes I don't go much past half way either, nothing wrong there. When you stop enjoying the smoke, stop smoking it, simple as that.
Won't hurt to try purging it, though.

Perfectly said galaga, I don't know why everyone thinks that need to nub the cigar in order to think it is "Finished". I hate to see people enjoy a great cigar and they start to run out of time then start to hit it every three seconds and ruin the experience because it get's way to hot.

Re: Can't get past half way

I agree with all of the above.

I would add though, that periodically I have hit rough spots on certain cigars. I used to put it out as soon as I no longer enjoyed it but after reading elsewhere about different changes the tastes can go through I've sometimes decided to tough it out. I would say often it pays off. 50% of the time the cigar will re-emerge with a good or different taste. If I get to the final 1/3 though and it is doing no more good for me... out it goes.

and I would add, try slowing down. Many make the mistake of puffing too fast, ruining a perfectly good cigar. Try to shoot for about 1 puff per minute and see if it still tastes bad 1/2 way through.

If none of the above works, just enjoy the 1st half and let it die!

Ditto what the other gorillas have said, if you get to a point where you're not enjoying the cigar, it's time to part company. I think it has to do with conditioning your taste buds. I, too, had some difficulty getting past the last third of a 'gar when I started. But as I became accustomed to the flavor of the smoke, and effects of the nicotine, I'm now in a different place.

Also, it helps if you are eating or drinking something. Not only does it 'cleanse' your palate, but enhances the experience.

Welcome aboard!

Re: Can't get past half way

I find that whilst some cigars are purgable, some just arent and it will never work for them. the only gar ive found that never needs to be purged is the Guanatanmera Cristales (ISOM). I tend to throw the gars after they taste bad (Zino Davidoff said never to smoke more than half the gar interestingly enough).

Re: Can't get past half way

Maybe yes...maybe no...

Many seem to change flavors in thirds to me...
In fact, my favorite smoke the RASS is usually very nice for the first 1/3, sort of uneventful and monotone for the middle 1/3, and then picks up and shows its best stuff in the last third.

If I am into the last third of a cigar and it still tastes nasty, then its a goner...otherwise I try to power through in case there is something good hidden in there at the end.

If it's an NC...well I agree, they seem to get harsher and harsher by the cm...those I rarely smoke to the nub anymore.

Mr. C

I used to smoke the whole cigar and the longer I smoke the more I find that I stop about halfway no matter what the vitola.

Re: Can't get past half way

Thanx all so much for your input...

I guess I should elaborate more...
I smoke very slowly (sometimes too slow as it goes out).
I get to around half way and the taste at the back of my throat gets too much (I don't inhale into lungs).

At certain points past the half way, if I force myself, I still get a puff here and there that tastes excellent... but it's the tobacco taste at the back of my throat that just continues to get stronger and unpleasant...

I guess it might just be that i'm too sensative to the tobacco still...

Thanx guys

Mr C, do you have a favorite beverage handy when you smoke? I like to have an ice cold Mt. Dew handy. Or a really good cold beer.

Re: Can't get past half way

Its all about taking it nice and slow. I start my smokes with a cup of coffee, then when I finish that and carry on smoking, I find I don't enjoy it as much, so I have to quickly grab a diet coke, or brew another coffee....then its all plain sailing again.
