There is much more involved in taste than taste buds and more complex flavors than those listed above are possible even from cigars.

Consider reading reviews first and then trying to discern the flavors listed. Perhaps this will hone your palate?
Well said. A lot of what a person identifies in the smoke has to do with what is being picked from the combination of both taste and smell.

Exactly! Smell is the key! I believe Mr. Maduroo has coined the term "snorking" when you let small amounts of smoke waft up and be exhaled from the nose. You can really pick up flavors that way.

BTW, the best tasting smoke I've ever had was a 20+ year old habano that tasted exactly like cinnimon apple pie.

Snorking is a good word for it

I read an article about getting flavors from cigars and it more or less suggested snorking. If I can find the link I will it post it here.

I'm glad I'm not the only one that is amazed by some of the "tastes" that are used describing cigars. Although I was smoking a Rare Corojo the other day and definitely tasted apricots. My favorite cigar aspects of the moment are when a cigar is "creamy" or "spicy" and when you get both .

I personaly haven't ever eaten leather so I don't know what it tastes like.

Thank you all so much for your input....

I'll just continue to enjoy the cigars till my palate develops
My next question then is, how do you force a little bit of smoke to the back of your throat to exhale through your nose without taking it into your lungs?
(ie how do you snork?)

Re: Tasting? Velvety grassy chocolate with hints of red apples. What?

Just another from another guy in the Jungle.... that's me

When I first started out smoking cigars I was much the same as you. I could detect strong over mild and once in awhile I tasted tobacco and maybe spice... or what I thought was spice.

However, as my passion for cigars deepened and my overall experience grew I found that I could pick up flavors in cigars that I had never noticed before. Example: instead of just being able to taste that a cigar was medium bodied I would taste that it was medium bodied but had snippets of sweetness in the smoke. This perplexed me.... sweet flavor? In smoke?

But yep it was there. As time progressed I was able to pick out more specific flavors that related to things I had experienced before like, cream, cinammon, honey-like sweetness, etc.

IMHO, the more cigars you experience the more flavors you are able to taste and the more your palate opens up to the things you've been missing before. I can go back to a cigar I first tried when starting out and taste things now that I never would have dreamed of being able to taste back then.

Then you progress a little further... and you try a Cuban Montecristo No 2. Now lets say that you get a No 2 that is ON and does not suffer from any inconsistencies or problems. First thing you notice when you light up??? - Cream, lots of creamy flavors coming out. Second thing you notice is a slight cocoa flavor. Not chocolate per se but cocoa. Oh and its good! Now as you progress through the Monte line in vitola's and find some with age, yes I have found many that taste like dark chocolate rather than cocoa. I guess now I'm able to pick out the difference between the two after sampling so many Monte 2's that had the cocoa and so many other Monte's that had the chocolate. You will experience this too as you move along in this obsession we call cigars.

Velvety I can help with too. I have sampled cigars that had a different kind of smoke than most. The feel and the texture of the smoke was heavier... more dense if you will. I called this type of smoke "chewy" because the consistency of the smoke actually made it feel like the smoke itself was a tangible object that I could chew in my mouth. It was trippy, it was a more dense type of smoke than I had experienced before. And as I sampled more aged smokes I new exactly what the "velvety" descriptor was all about.

To me, velvety was different from the denser smoke in that this type of smoke (and I'm talking about the actual smoke itself, not the flavor) was more smooth in texture. The way it felt on my tongue was velvety. It was smoother more rich type of smoke, and the word velvety just fit so well.

To me, as you go along in this, you will be constantly surprised at what happens to your palate as your tastes mature. I went from liking very light cigars, to craving the strong ones, back to appreciating the subtlety of the medium bodied ones, then to appreciating the depth of the older ones, to where I am now... which is loving ALL of them

Who knows where my palate will take me next, but that is half the fun of this passion... not knowing where its taking you, but enjoying every minute of it.
