Cigar not burning straight

Hey all......god its been ages, several months since i've been here. Its been one hell of a summer.

Anyway, I have a question (yes another one lol).

The other day I had myself a fine Montecristo, and noticed that it didn't burn equally. It did, in all fairness towards the end correct itself and burn straight, but I'd like to try and avoid such problems in the future.

Could it have been the way i lit it that caused the uneven burn?

cheers guys

Re: Cigar not burning straight

I think it has something to do with humidity, If it is too moist it wont burn correctly.

Re: Cigar not burning straight

I think there are many things that can cause an uneven burn. Lighting it one-sided could cause it, also it could be just poorly rolled.

Re: Cigar not burning straight

Make sure you have a good even light to start. If one side is slower, it usually helps to put the slow burning side down. If that does not help you can moisten the fast burning side to slow it down. Some cigars just don't play nice and there is nothing you can do.

Re: Cigar not burning straight

Let's assume the cigar and the environment you're smoking in are not too humid. An even light is crucial. Try rotating the cigar in your hand as you smoke it. If it gets really out of hand, use a lighter to burn off the unburnt portion to even it out.

Re: Cigar not burning straight

I just had myself a Montecristo not 20 minutes ago while walking my dog. The cigar lasted the whole walk, which was a good 45 minutes or so.

Anyway, when lighting this one i differed my approach slightly. As usual, I cut the cigar, cupped my hand round the lighter to prevent even the slightest breeze blowing it out, and i held the flame at the tip of the cigar, moving it from left to right over the tip while taking draws for several seconds.

I certainly got a much more even burn this time, and it burned even the whole time it lasted. I have to say, tonights Montecristo cigar I enjoyed very much.

Have to try the same method on the RYJ Churchill i have sitting in my draw just now

WOW, that's a HUGE tip! I've tried everthing from relighting the slow side to holding it at a 45-degree angle in my left hand behind my back (while facing South-South-West, of course) and reciting magic spells... I'll definitely try this simpler approach!

Thanks!

Re: Cigar not burning straight

Try lowering your humidity down a little. If you are using a torch lighter, without drawing on it try and light it evenly around the tip and then draw. I also agree you can rotate the slow burning side down, but a touch up will usually work better.

There's just one statement in the above post that has me curious. You said you were pulling a RyJ out of a draw. Are you keeping your smokes in a humidor or some kind of humidity controlled device? If not this could be a hint of the source of your problems.

Re: Cigar not burning straight

I found if I let my cigar sit for 2 to 3 months in the humi and rotate them every month I no longer have many burn issues.

The cigar's i've been buying are individual cigars in their tubes. I don't want to spend £300 odd just yet on a box of cigars. Plus, I don't have a humi to store them in

Re: Cigar not burning straight

FWIW... If I'm planning to smoke a particular cigar in the evening, I remove it from the humidor, clip it, and let it sit in open-air for a couple of hours. This seems to "eaqualize" humidity levels, and minimize burn issues.

(Good God! I'm sounding like a scientist here! Which I am definitely NOT!!!)

Get yourself a tupperware container or a cooler, add a humidifier medium and store your cigars in that. Even if cigars are in tubes, they will still need to be properly humidified.

i've tried this approach, and I have to say that it does help as well. unless of course, it's 100% humidity in your house but seriously, I try to let it sit outside the humidor for a couple hours, and I find that helps with draw and burn problems.
