Thompson Iguana vs. Flor De Jalapa?

I have smoked the Flor De Jalapa and found it an interesting smoke. I was wondering if any of the Candelas like Thompson Iguana compared to it or if anyone knows who has tried both. Now, Camacho makes a Candela and Macanudos have a candela typer wrapper. Also AF makes some Candela wrappers. But, I guess most of all I wanted to know the difference between the Iguana and the Flor De Jalapa any comments ?

Bob, I haven’t tried any of the Flor De Jalapas, however, I happen to have most of a box of the Iguana Robustos left, and if you would like I could send you a couple to compare yourself. Just PM me an address and I will try to get them out the first of next week.

^ Bob, it takes a bigman to make an offer like that and you shouldn't pass it up. Very generous.

Rocky P – if you would like I will extend you the same offer as I have Bob. It’s not that I’m just trying to get rid of them; I merely bought a box of the Robusto as my first real purchase, and have only smoked two so far. I will be trying another, maybe this weekend, but I haven’t had one in quite a wile, and I have been on a Maduro kick as of late. So, if you want to try a couple, just PM me and let me know. I’ll be offline Saturday and Sunday, but I will be back on Monday, or I’ll be on till about 11pm EST tonight, but I wont have time to get anything out till probably Tuesday.

Re: Thompson Iguana vs. Flor De Jalapa?

I must confess, I have not tried either. In fact, during my brief association with Thompsons I purchased one box of their house brands (Dona Ines) and my other purchases from them were premiums. I stayed away from their other brands as I instinctively knew they were for chit. I realize that may make me sound like a bit of a snob but, there it is.
As for the Candela wrapper smokes, I have not had any experience at all, nor do I have any interest. It is due to the description of them; I prefer wrappers with more body.

Ya, I wish I could say that these were my only purchase form Thompson’s, but I can say from memory they were a lot better than the cardboard gars I got in the Thompson sampler. And, I don’t thank of anybody as a snob for what they prefer in a smoke. I too have found that I like a fuller gar better than the mild gars. To each their own…or something like that.

My buddy bought a box of Iguanas from Thompsons and gave me one. They were, uh, yeah... not my favorite. About after 1", I had to put it down.

I know other companies make candela sticks, I would try of those. Fuente comes to mind.

I seem to remember that Don Tomas made or makes a candela wrapper also. I smoked a candela about twenty some years ago -

That was enough for me.

Re: Thompson Iguana vs. Flor De Jalapa?

I for one have had the Flor De Jalapa previously put out by Swisher Sweet company. It was known as a good cigar in 1996. I had one recently which was purchased in Tulsa by a friend and gifted to me. Even though the wrapper was abit fragile I thought it an ok mild cigar and had a bit of flavor to it. I could well understand why it was a decently rated cigar in the past.
That is why I wanted someone here to make a little distinction between the two. I am not a fan of Thompson's but their humidor prices ain't so bad even if you don't smoke the cigars they send. It is not an important cigar to me. But, because it was ok I thought what the hey, why not post it as a question. A lot of newbies try the stuff from them. I wanted to see if there was some comment because in the past it was a good cigar that got good ratings. They just did not sell enough and it did not make a big enough market splash. So Thompson's picked up the whole lot...
I went to a Shoe auction one time and they sold at auction "lots" of shoes that were perfectly fine and good to wear. There was nothing wrong with them. But we got 5,000 shoes at 50 cents a pair. I sold them for 10 bux a pair and ended up making a decent profit. Nothing wrong with that. I bet that is what Thompson's did bought it at cheap price to sell it for profit. Heck, any compan coud do this. If any company doesn't sell the stuff they might have someone crush the stuff up and make a shortfiller and wrap it with a new binder and wrapper and you will never know it. Not saying they do that or would do that ...but it could be done.

You make a good point. I actually know someone who likes Iguanas; he recommended them to me when he found out I smoke cigars. He was so enthusiastic about them, I couldn't bring myself to say anything negative about them.

I've never really ad a good experience with candelas but I've only ever smoked two (both camachos) so maybe other brands do it better.

Re: Thompson Iguana vs. Flor De Jalapa?

Don Tomas makes a nice, inexpensive candela. I bought a Cuba Aliados fiver from the devil, but haven't tried any yet. The Iguana, while not on the same level as the Don Tomas, does have that candela thing and probably won't make you generally ill like some of the other Thompsons offerings.
