Re: Refining Your Pallette

Great Post.
I have a problem of smoking too fast. I am afraid of it going out and average 2-3 draws a minute.

Due to this bad habit, I now have a sore, burnt tongue

Thank you for this information.
Ken

Re: Refining Your Pallette

What a great post. This reminds me of tasting advice I used to give people when I was a wine rep. (Don't blow wine through your nose, though!). It took me a long time to get my pallette refined for picking flavors from wine and one day it happened. I am hoping the same will occurr with cigars.

Your advice is really good. I, like others have said, have a hard time using the 1 min. rule. I will definately share this with my buds who are getting into stogies with me. Thanks!!

Re: Refining Your Pallette

I used to somke way too fast and always had a burnt tongue. I have learned a little in 10 years of smoking though and one of the first was to slow it down.

That was a very good article but what I really want to know is - what was the cigar that had the dried apricot notes? I love dried apricots and have never found that in a smoke.

Re: Refining Your Pallette

oh wow, great advice! I personally don't like to read too many reviews before smoking a stick for the first time... I just want to try and get a sense of the cigar for myself... otherwise, I'll probably taste spicey earthy leathery coffee in everything. I first like to determine if I like the stick or not... then I definitely try to read as much as I can after that first smoke... and see if my experience is similar... then on subsequent smoking of a partcular cigar I like to find those characteristics that I may have missed.

Oh, and I'd like to add... smoke slower.

Re: Refining Your Pallette

Thank you, that's what makes CS what it is. As I read through this I was happy to know that I've been doing most of (if not, trying) all your tips. It really does help. I'm begining to really learn what it is that I like and dislike. I can't imagine how much more I will enjoy cigars as I become more refined.

Re: Refining Your Pallette

I read this post when I first joined CS and it helped me a lot. Now I find that I am able to pick up flavors when I smoke cigars.....and if I can keep myself from smoking them too fast I might even pick up more.

This is a must read though for every newb

I am not saying go buy a box of ANYTHING based on a review. If a review or a couple of reviews describe flavors that seem to be in your preferred flavor profile, then pick up a couple to try for yourself before committing to a box.

6.) Smoke a cigar that has been reviewed and try to follow along with the reviewer. You'll be amazed at how smoking along with someone else's notes will help you pick up flavors that you couldn't put your finger on.

Great tips Mark! The two above are specially useful for newbs who taste some thing but just can't put their finger on it.
