Cigar Odor/Taste

The other night, I fired up a Davidoff 4000 after a great meal and I experienced something that I'm not sure if it's odd since I'm a newcomer in cigar smoking.

After lighting the cigar, the taste seemed pungent --personally, I'd describe it as smelling like someone's BO. My girlfriend described it as something like burnt hair. After smoking it for a few minutes--the odd taste and odor has dissipated and I got to enjoy it.

Now, this was a cigar a friend of mine has given me as we were buying smokes at the Davidoff store on Madison Ave. a month ago. He bought a handful of the 4000's and I bought a Punch Gran Cru Superior. I remember that when I smoked the Punch the day after, the odor/taste somewhat resembled what I described above which was gone after smoking a bit of it.

I'm assuming that the flavor of the cigars came from the store? All their cigars are displayed openly in the walk-in humidor room.

If so, how would taste like this be taken care of? Should I have aged it further in my humi? I didn't really smell that odor before lighting it up.

My friend hasn't smoked his batch yet so I can't confirm this. Or maybe it's just me! How do I avoid this in the future?

Any insight?

(Note, I've posted this on CA's forums too--figured I'd ask the apes )

your friend didn't store them in his armpits did he? just kidding, but seriously that taste could have a lot to do with how it was stored. was it taken care of properly in a humidor ?

Re: Cigar Odor/Taste

As soon as we left the store, he handed me the stick and I let it sit in the humi for about a month. My other sticks didn't have these traits, however.

I'm just assuming it has something to do with the way it was stored at the store since it is probably more than a coincidence that both the Punch and the Davidoff exhibited similar traits the first few minutes.

I dunno!

Wow, that's very strange. I've heard of similar things when people light up thier cigars, but never from the Davidoff store. Maybe it has to do with introducing it into a new humidor after it's been in another for so long. Maybe you have "lesser" cigars in your humi, and thier simple presence angered the Punch and Davidoff!

j/k - any chance you lit the cigars with a match or a zippo?

Re: Cigar Odor/Taste

I'd also want to know what you lit it with. That makes a difference as well in the first few puffs of a cigar. If I have a cigar that comes wrapped in cedar I enjoy a great deal using the cedar to light the cigar. The combination of inhaling the burnt cedar through the nose and through the cigar as it is lit in my opinion effects the cigar for several puffing iterations. So if you lit it with something that wasn't quite right that may help explain things???

Well, I lit the Punch with a match and the Davidoff with a torch lighter.
I shall remain forever baffled!

Oh well, I guess this comes with territory of being a newbie--I'll just smoke more to learn more; yeah that's the ticket!

I don't have anything else that came from the store. My friend who was with me is currently out of town and will let me know about the 4000's when he gets back next week.
