Cigars cracking

Hey everyone,

I have had my cigars for about 8 months now, there is about 12 cigars left in a humi that holds 20-25 cigars and now most of my cigars are starting to crack at the open end. I try to keep the level between 70 nd 80.

Is the humi to dry or to wet?? The cigars feel softer than I remeber....

Any ideas?

Thanks

Re: Cigars cracking

1. try salt-tsting to see if it is accurate.
2. You probably don't want to get to 80%... very dangerous
3. maybe the humidor seal is bad
4. maybe they were damaged while moving it, if you did

Re: Cigars cracking

Splitting feet is a sign of overhumdification I think, lower your humidity levelMost people keep their cigars somewhere between 65-70% rh

Re: Cigars cracking

If they feel softer than you remember, and are cracking at the foot, the rh in your humi may be too high. Try removing the source of humidity (I'm drinking) and see if that doesn't help them return to normal. You could also add some more sticks to the humi to help absorb the extra moisture.

Wink Re: Cigars cracking

First salt test your hygrometer just to make sure your rh is high. Which I am sure it is. If you need instructions here are some good ones. http://www.clubstogie.com/vb/showthr...ight=salt+test

Second read this post if you haven't. :s http://www.clubstogie.com/vb/showthread.php?t=25122

Third I would buy some viper beads they fixed my problems! http://www.heartfeltindustries.com/.

I was having the same problems that you were. More and more of my cigars were starting to get soft and two or three had cracked. That was about the time I found this site. I ordered my beads about a week after reading about them. And it was the best decision I made. If you do buy the beads make sure to take out your stock humidifier. That was the mistake I made. And if you get the beads just put them in there as they come don't wet them unless they look completely dry. Within a few days your rh should be right were you want it. And then if they need to be I would mist them to there 60-70%. Then about a week or so later your sticks should start to feel and smoke a lot better. I have had my beads for about a month haven't touched them since putting them in my humidor and have been at 65% ever since (after they finally brought the rh down). Read the above links as they are a great source for setting up a humidor Properly.

Hope this helps
Dominic

Oh and thanks Demented, RGD, and Viper in no particular order. Great info and product.

Re: Cigars cracking

If they're cracking at the foot then it's most likely due to over humidification, the excessive amount of moisture is causing the tobacco to swell, which leads to cracking or ripping of the wrapper.

Lower the RH so it's a stable 70% or down to like 65%, so much flavor to be had at those levels. GL

Cigars are too wet. 80% is WAY to high to store cigars. Most people on this board think 70% is too high. Anyway, I have seen the same thing happen > 75% RH. Follow the instructions others have given you above and you should be OK.

Re: Cigars cracking

Are you trying to drown your cigars in humidity? Cripes... I get pissy when my rH hits 70%

Re: Cigars cracking

Premium sticks like to be kept around 65% IMHO, no higher. By premium I don't necessarily mean expensive, but more-tightly rolled or more-aged cigars...anything from Cubans to Olivas.

I only keep one humi at 70%, for the everyday-type smokes that actually perform better when kept a little more humid.

But under no circumstances would I keep cigars at higher than 70%.

Re: Cigars cracking

I would have to agree with the concensus on this one. Sounds like too much moisture to me. I try and keep mine in the 65%-68% rh range and the temp under 70F.

65%-70%

You're lucky that they were splitting lengthwise down the cigar!

Re: Cigars cracking

I've had this problem as well... wrapper splitting and the stogie seems to swell towards the bottom 3rd. The humidity had gone up to between 70%-75%. Now it's down to around 65% and it has done wonders.

Re: Cigars cracking

I was having the same problem when I was keeping my cigars at about 72%. After buying 65% beads, the problem seems to have been solved. All my cigars seem to be smoking so much smoother too.

Re: Cigars cracking

Thanks everyone for the advice. I will lower the lvl and hope that helps. I haven't invested a lot of money into cigars yet so I don't want to go crazy, don't have the finances to do that yet.

Thanks again!

Wink Re: Cigars cracking

Get that humidity down and I think you will be much happier with your sticks. And as I stressed in my previous post I would go for the beads. Actually I am ordering some beads on tuesday pm me your address and I will send you some. Also send me the demensions of your humidor so I know how much to send.

Happy New Year
