Question How can you trust a tubo?

I'm always leery of cigars I can't see. (Imaginary cigars scare the crap out of me! ) I have always thought that poorly constructed cigars which had something to hide were covered up with cedar or a metal tube. Yet, I've been reading a lot of threads saying that tubos are awesome and that they put the best cigars in them. What's the story? Is my fear of tubos unfounded?

Don't be scared. It's just a cigar!

Re: How can you trust a tubo?

I think the idea is that wrapped and tubo'ed cigars are SO good that they deserve the extra prep and protection. and my experience has been that for the most part, a manufacturer isn't trying to hide anything that way... all the tubos I've tried have had as good, if not better, looking sticks wrapped or in their tubos, as they would sell exposed/naked.

I don't think you have to worry about the look... my fear would be the condition... they claim that tubos keep sticks fresh and cedar wrap helps age better... but from my experience, that is probably not always the case... you still need to be wary about how they were stored for the long term... tubos can eventually dry out and cedar wrap can hide a mold problem...

but as a very general rule, the sticks they subject to the special treatments seem to start off as the better ones in the line.

What comes out of the tube is only as good as what went into it.

Re: How can you trust a tubo?

I don't worry about the tube one bit. Like Klugs said, if a good cigar went into the tube, that is what is coming out. If a Garcia y Vega went in, it is NOT coming out a Davidoff. As long as you are buying good cigars from reputable makers, there is no need to fear the tube. I actually prefer the tubed versions of most cigars with the following being some of my favorite:

1. Punch (HON) Royal Coronation
2. Montecristo (DR) White Montecristo Court
3. Punch (HON) Gran Cru Monarcas
4. Davidoff 2000 Tubo
5. Davidoff Special "R" Tubo
6. Montecristo (DR) Afrique Sublimation
7. Montecristo (DR) H2000 Magnum
8. Dunhill Cabrera
9. Davidoff Anniversario No. 3
10. Punch (HON) Gran Puro Libertad

All of the above are cigars that I have tried in quantity, and have not had a problem with any of them. In the case of the Davidoff 2000 and Special "R", which have non-tubo versions of the exact same cigar, I actuall prefer the taste of the tubed version.

The first cigar I ever bought was a Royal Coronation and I bought it because I thought the tube was cool. Hmmm...I feel like going out and getting another one now!
