Excalibur by HDM No.1 (M)

Has anyone ever had this excalibur cigar from Hoyo de Monterrey? They seem to be pretty inexpensive and Im thinking about getting a box. The word is they are med to full bodied. I really enjoy Aurora's (1495) and La Gloria Cubanas, how does the excalibur comare? thanks

Re: Excalibur by HDM No.1 (M)

I haven't had either of the two you mention but I have smoked Excaliburs forever. Great smoke IMHO. I believe they are a General cigar honduran. Never have had a bad one. Very consistent, well made and good flavor. If I wasn't in the middle of a huge "try a ton of things I haven't tried" binge I probably would pick up a box myself.

Not that I couldn't age them....

no must resist ...

and it's not like I don't have ANY in case I want one.

Depends on your taste of course but I don't think you can go wrong with the Exaliburs.

I prefer the EMS wrappers but otherwise I think they're very good. They benefit immensely from a rest in your humidor, though. When fresh, I found them a little too spicy and hot but after a few months in the humidor they burn cooler and the flavor is much more mellow. After a year, well, they're really nice.

I really want to try the Excalibur 1066 line. Maybe in a few months when I can finally start working again (and buying cigars again ). Good luck in your quest with the Excaliburs!

I haven't had these, but I have smoked a few of the 1066 Dark Knights and have a few more resting. I know the 1066s are a slightly different breed, but I can say that I really like them a lot and would highly recommend them, especially for the price. I would say they are more similar to the LGC Series R Maduros (I don't like the HDM's quite as much, but its a close call!) than the LA 1495.

The Excalibur 1066's are worth a try, I love them. I picked up a 5-pack of the Dark Knight III's, 4.5" x 50 and they quickly became one of my favorites. I am eager to try the Dark Knight I's, 5.75" x 54, as they have a different wrapper and are toted to have a little different flavor.

I agree wholeheartedly that they're very good smokes. They're probably my favorite non-Cuban Cubans, and I further agree that they benefit immensely from a good, long rest in your humidor. The difference between one week and one year is tremendous.

If you like the LGC's or any of the Punch's you'll like the Excaliburs. A word of caution: If you are not used to the FULL flavors the HDM Dark Sumatra's may not be for you. But most if not all the HDM's and Excal's run in the Med-Full range. And yes, give them a rest before sacrificing them.

I thought the No 1s maduros were OK. Kind of mild to me so I guess I'd describe as "medium". I used to like the LGC maduros much more (than the HDM maduros) but quit LGC due to wide variations in quality and recieving one too many boxes of moldy cigars. The HD #1 was a well constructed cigar, just kind of "blah" to me. I prefer the Punch Oscuro Rothschild by a wide margin.

Re: Excalibur by HDM No.1 (M)

I think they're on the mild side of medium, especially if you're comparing them to LGCs. They have that classic Honduran flavor (creamy, woody, earthy IMHO).

I used to smoke them quite often, but I've gravitated to stronger sticks of late. In this line I prefer the EMS wrapper. If you're going to get the maddy, go for the Pensado Oscuro.......the best maddy in the line IMHO.
