Dipping cigar in cognac?

My friend told me about how he did this once. He would dip the mouth end of the cigar in a little bit of cognac (think it was Bowen XO) and then smoke it. Do people actually do this? Is it good? To me it seems it would get all soggy and not draw right. I have a bottle of cognac so Im wondering whether its worth doing.

Re: Dipping cigar in cognac?

i've heard of people doing this, i don't know if this is general practice held by folks in the jungle, tho. seems like something out of hollywood rather than actually useful.

if you want to taste cognac, buy a cognac flavored cigar or have a glass of it. otherwise, i say you're gonna ruin your cigar.

(if it's does with cognac, why not pepsi?)

I would drink the cognac and smoke the cigar, dipping a cigar in cognac would completely ruin it. Unless it's a Thompson, then it doesn't matter cause it's gonna suck anyway.

Why anyone would want to do this is beyond me.
When I want Cognac flavor and a smoke I drink cognac and smoke.
Same with wine, beer, coke or anything else.

Re: Dipping cigar in cognac?

I have seen people putting a small bowl of cognac in a sealed glass jar and they put cigars around the bowl, but not dipped. I tried a CAO Italia with this kind of treatment before and I think the cognac taste is too overpowering for me.

FYI: Anejo is aged in a cognac barrell.

Re: Dipping cigar in cognac?

I believe I had read somethign about this -

I think back in the early days before everyone had access to good humidification gentlemen would dip there cigars in hopes of restoring some mositure to dryed out cigars. This would have been pre 1930s of course. I think your friend and or hollywood just picked up this old practise an because of this helped continue the myth. Much like the lovely biting off the end of the cigar.

I think it is only the wrapper and not the whole cigar.

I have actually tried it.
It does nothing for the smoking experience.

Re: Dipping cigar in cognac?

I think this was something that was attributed to the iconic Winston Churchill whether he actually did it or not I don't know, but people have been saying it for a long time.

Re: Dipping cigar in cognac?

Sir Winston Churchill used to do this but what people did not know was that he had wrapped a piece of kraft paper around the end of the cigar to keep his lips from touching the wrapper and the cognac kept the kraft paper soft and pliable. He smoked so many cigars that he supposedly developed an allergy to the oils in the cigar wrapper and his lips would become ulcerated if tobacco came in contact with them. This appears to be the origin of the dipping legend. Hope this helps.

Re: Dipping cigar in cognac?

i'm pretty sure they are allowed to dry considerably before smoking. never tried it though, sounds like the gateway step towards smoking flavored cigars, and if that ever happens, please put me on cigar probation

Re: Dipping cigar in cognac?

Hate to admit it...but....I've done this to. It adds a nice flavor to your cigar for about 2 -3 minutes than back to normal smoke. I like drinking it awhole lot better.

Course Grad Mariner and cigar is an awesome combination.
