Do cigars affect your sleep?

I am wondering if any of you have experienced an affect on your sleep after smoking at night. I had only half of a robusto (Fonseca series F) last night (also had a Torano 1959 silver robusto earlier in the day) and woke up around 4 AM or so. I have had trouble sleeping lately and cut out alcohol in the evening thinking that might help. So I am not sure if this episode last night had to do with smoking or just stress.

Re: Do cigars affect your sleep?

I have found that increasing my alchohol intake at night actually helps me sleep.
Or maybe I just pass out. Either way I seem to sleep fine.

I can *fall* asleep easily that way but invariably wake up in the middle of the night and am restless from then on.

I have been waking up at 4 am for the last 3 months.. I dont think it has anything to do with cigars but I never really gave it much thought..

Re: Do cigars affect your sleep?

If I smoke too late, I have a horrible time falling asleep; but an even WORSE time trying to STAY asleep.... nicotine and the various other CNS-active constituents of burning tobacco are odd beasts.....simultaneous depressant and stimulant activities, no doubt raising hell with sleep as the blood levels wax and wane. I have a hard cut off time of 4 hours before sleep, otherwise I pay the price. Then again, if I have a realllllllllly good cigar.... and just have to have it...... there's always ambien or xanax to pave the way.

Re: Do cigars affect your sleep?

If I smoke a cigar less than three hours before I go to bed I won't be able to sleep. It does depend somewhat on the vitamin N content of said cigar. I really shouldn't smoke cubans after about 2 in the afternoon.

Re: Do cigars affect your sleep?

If I had to bet I would say stress is probably the cause. I live on stress so I know what it’s like it will reek havoc on your body in ways you would never think of.

Saying that I usually top off the night with a cigar. We put the boy to bed, and about 9:00 or so I will go out and light up. It hasn’t affected my sleep to my knowledge. I am also a cigarette smoker so that may be part of it as well.

Yeah, its been found that alcohol helps you fall asleep, but messes with your sleep cycle (which could cause you to wake up randomly, feel tired when you wake up at your normal time, etc). As for cigars, nicotine is a stimulant, so I wouldn't be surprised if it made it difficult to fall asleep. I haven't noticed a problem with cigars specifically, but I have a sleep disorder, so I'm not the best example.

Re: Do cigars affect your sleep?

I smoked two in the four hours or so before I went to bed last night and had no trouble whatsoever.
But then again I have no trouble falling asleep most anywhere.

Cigars, no. The gallon of coffee I drink everyday, yes.
