Does ring guage/length really affect taste ?
a question from a noob:
when making a cigar purchase, i get confused with all the different sizes in a particular brand/blend cigar. just as an example, will a churchill always taste noticeably different than a corona in the same brand and blend cigar ? |

Re: Does ring guage/length really affect taste ?
Short answer, Kind of.
Long answer... while the blend of different vitolas of a brand are pretty much the same, they are in different proportions in each different size. The wrapper to binder ratio is different in smaller ring gauges as well, therefore making them taste a bit different. Overall they'll taste pretty similar in most cases.

Re: Does ring guage/length really affect taste ?
Short answer:
More wrapper flavor in smaller ring guages due to higher proportion of wrapper material to filler/binder material.

Ditto what Marlboro Cigars said. In my experience it makes a profound difference.
I smoke corona, lonsdale or petit corona whenever possible for this very reason (and because it's more ergonomically convenient.) |

Ditto here. I find I enjoy larger ring gauge cigars, but there should be more wrapper and binder flavour with smaller ringe gauges.

I find the larger ring size cigar the draw of smoke is cooler all the way down to the nub and you get more volume of smoke on each draw.

Re: Does ring guage/length really affect taste ?
As for the taste of one cigar to another, geeez there are numerous factors that influence the taste and strength of the cigar. For example you plant the tobacco seed in honduras and another seed from the same plant in the Dominican Rep, just the soil alone affects the taste of the tobacco. Find out were each part of the cigar tobacco is grown (Filler, binder, wrapper) and compare each cigar based on all the factors when combined. There is a data base available which breaks down each part of each cigar to the location it was grown. But you'll have to also keep in mind that one company to the next may age their tobacco for longer or shorter periods - just another factor that influences a cigar.

Re: Does ring guage/length really affect taste ?
personally i like the larger ring gauge cigars, because they burn a lot cooler. i find them to usually be more flavorful. up to a certain point of course. sometimes a thicker cigar of one line might not burn as well.
for example, i love the indian tabac extra fuerte line, i bought some of the 6x60's of the same cigar, and i love those even more. they burn cooler and were more flavorful to me.

Additionally...it has been my experience has been that thinner ring gauges tend to have more concentration (and/or more subtle flavors) with long term aging.
Hope this helps ~Mark |

Re: Does ring guage/length really affect taste ?
RG may... when I was a young chimp with only 10 RG I couldn't pick out any flavours or anything....now at a little over 1400 the flavours seems to come out a lot more... (I even put an extra letter "U" in flavor because thats how sophisticated I am now)
I'm in one of those moods to not be serious... I know my brothas'/Sistas' can be counted on for good info ![]() |

Re: Does ring guage/length really affect taste ?
Also the longer cigars and bigger ring gauges require more smoking time. If your trying to burn one during your lunch hour then you probably want to avoid the 7 1/2 60 RGs lol.

Re: Does ring guage/length really affect taste ?
Best thing to do is to try for yourself. Buy a robusto and a smaller format of the same brand and try 'em out. They are different.
