Dry beads.... Humidity higher??

So all of the beads in my humidor were dry yesterday, and i noticed the humidity rising. so i left it dry for a day and watch it climb frmo 65-66% to 71% just now when i filled the beads again. this goes against what i thought what happen. I thought with dry beads, it should suck the humidity out of the humidor. it is fairly humid in my apt, no where near 70% though.

any clue who this would happen?

Re: Dry beads.... Humidity higher??

I'd venture to guess the temperature rose thereby increasing the RH.

More moisture should cause high humidity - not dry beads. I'm also thinking it has to do with higher temps.

Re: Dry beads.... Humidity higher??

but why when the temps go higher do the dry beads not suck in the humidity?

They do but the process is extremely slow. It can take days or even weeks for them to absorb large amounts of moisture. They're best at regulating 1-2% changes. When it goes beyond that it's best to open the humidor and give it some air for a few.

Temp in the room and temp in the box have a huge factor.

I wouldnt worry as long as you have the correct humidity in there. Just keep a close eye on them.

thanks so much for the reply, i was not sure how quickly they could absorb moisture out of the air. that makes sense as to why it was rising so fast.

thanks again!

Re: Dry beads.... Humidity higher??

I currently have the opposite problem. I added 70% beads to my humidor, and the humidity went from 71% down to 65% where it is now. The beads were recently charged before putting them in, so I'm not sure why it's having difficulty maintaining the intended humidity. I added the distilled water using a water dropper. I put them into a little dish and added the water there. Could this be a bad idea, since the dish was previously washed using regular water and detergent?

65% is a good place to be, what temp are you keeping them at? Humidity is relative so it will fluctuate with the temperature of the humidor.

If the soap wasn't thoroughly cleaned off the dish then the residue could have caused some of the beads to become plugged but I shouldn't think just 1 time would make too much of a difference.

The temperature has been hovering between 68 and 72 degrees. Wouldn't the beads take care of the fluctuations in humidity, even if caused by temperature?
