Question Cigar Experts Ahoy! - Question: The Maduro

I know what you’re thinking.

“Already his second thread – enough with these questions already!

- or –

“His second thread already, what a handsome fine example of a man.”

Either way – I call again upon ye experts to direct me in my cigar journey. I’ve done extensive searching on these boards but I’ve not yet come across an exact explanation for this particular question. If there is one and I’ve missed it – my apologies and I’ll dance a jig at your wedding.

I was conversing with my tobacconist (good fellow) about maduro cigars – and he explained that even though I’m a mild-to-medium smoker (for now, the strongest I’ve had lately is the Punch Grand Cru and I was fine) – there are some maduros that I should be able to handle as maduro isn’t necessarily an identifier for a strong (nicotine) cigar. His suggestion – the CAO MX2. Well, while a tasty cigar – half way down I got the infuriating warning flag of light-headedness so I had to put it out.

The question! Do you have any mild-to-medium (and I mean medium – not full-medium, low nicotine strength) maduro cigar recommendations? For instance – I love the CAO Gold, is the CAO Gold Maduro cigar just the same thing in a maduro wrapper?

I look forward to your suggestions, or will perhaps suffer your chastising.

Cheers.

Re: Cigar Experts Ahoy! - Question: The Maduro

Very good question. And your tobacconist is right in that many people see a dark maduro wrapper and automatically think it's a full bodied cigar. I'd try a Padron 2000 Maduro, or an Oliva Serie G Maduro, both of those are medium bodied, yet full flavored cigars.

Yes the Gold Maduro is the same as the Gold with a maduro wrapper; There's alot of lighter maddies out there, but try the Gold Maduro if the Mx2 was too strong for you and you like CAOs.

Two other good ones are the Gispert Maduro and the Flor de Oliva Maduro. You might also want to try an Arturo Fuente 858 Maduro.

Any cigar you let age will slowly reduce the nicotine content as the tobacco ages.

For me in that situation, I'd try one of the Rocky Patel Vintage 90's or 92's. They borderline medium to medium-full, depending on how long they've been sitting to age, but of the 100 or so I've smoked of the 92's, none have ever toed the line of full bodied.

Re: Cigar Experts Ahoy! - Question: The Maduro

I actually find that Maduros are generally pretty low in nicotine power. The LGC Series R Maduro is a pretty good medium strength maduro. The Sancho Panzo Double Maduro and the SLR Maduros are also excellent mild-medium nicotine-powered maduros at a great price point. Then again, I don't find the MX2 strong at all, and absolutely love it.

The RP Vintage has never struck me as too powerful, but for one exception: the 1990 Torpedo. I've smoked almost every size in the line (including many of the Churchills), and for some reason, the torpedo has caught me off guard on more than one occassion.

Re: Cigar Experts Ahoy! - Question: The Maduro

I have been leaning towards the RP vintage stuff, as well as the indian tabac super fuerte maduro. My brother likes the Onyx reserve, though I have yet to smoke one...

hit c-bid and bid on a maduro sampler of some sort...that's the best way that I can think of to find your faves!

Re: Cigar Experts Ahoy! - Question: The Maduro

Gotta love madddies!!

Mild maduro huh? I haven't tried 'em all like a lot of the other gorillas here, but a couple you might want to check out are:

Padron 3000....yummy. Not sure if it's a Maduro, but the flavor is beeeyouteeful!!

Torano has some very good sticks. Not sure which one is a Maduro.

I just had a Mayorga last weekend that was quite tasty.

A couple other maduros I like are the Cusano 18 and the Perdomo Lot 23.

Keep us posted.

I love the CAO MX2.......just had one a couple of hours ago!

Re: Cigar Experts Ahoy! - Question: The Maduro

Fantastic replies - these forums continue to astound!

I did have a few red flags pop up I'd like to run by you though.

The following suggestions...

- Sancho Panza Double Maduro
- Perdomo Lot 23 Maduro
- LGC Serie R Maduro
- Onyx Reserve Maduro
- Rocky Patel Vintage Maduro
- Oliva Serie G Maduro
- Padron 2k, 3k Maduro

... are all listed as "Full" or "Powerful" on a few cigar websites that sell them. My lightweight-ness just can't handle a cigar like that (the CAO MX2, Punch Champion, and Punch Rare Corojo did me in half way through the smoke) where as these other following suggestions...

- Flor de Oliva Maduro
- CAO Gold Maduro
- Gispert Maduro
- AF 858 Maduro
- Ashton Classic Maduro

... all seem to be listed as "mild" or "medium" - much as their counterpart in a natural rapper seems to be. The natural version of the above 5 cigars I was able to handle no sweat (and they were tasty to boot).

What do you think - is my research leading me astray - or am I on the right track here?

Cheers.

I second the recommendation fo the Cusano 18 'paired maduro'. It won't make you dizzy, yet it's a tasty smoke.

Re: Cigar Experts Ahoy! - Question: The Maduro

Two more cents:

-- SP Double Maduro (good price, fine stick)
-- El Mejor Espresso (cheap, flavorful, but require some aging)
-- Nestor Reserve Maduro (a nice value stick, requiring less aging)
-- Astral #1 Perfecto Maduro (my current favorite daytime smoke... Cheap, short, consistent flavor, and excellent burn)

I just picked up a Cusano 18 Maduro, by suggestion of the Tobacconist at Churchill's (Cherry Hill, NJ) He said for a $6 stick it is exceptional.
I had not heard of them until then and then looking at everyone pictures of their Humi's I saw a few. I have yet to try it.

As for a suggestion.
Being a n00b myself I can only say that I very much enjoyed the Rocky Patel Vintage 1992 and keep a couple in my humi, as well as the 1990 which I have not tried yet.

I also enjoy the Carlos Torano Smokes
So Far I have only tried the Signature series in a Torpedo and a Robusto Both were exceptional also.....boy I talk to much

Good Luck with your selection
