Punch or Cut

Do you Punch or Cut your cigars or use both methods at different times.

Personally I punch any large guage cigars and Guillitine cut the smaller guage or figarado types. Used to travel alot to Europe and noiced most cuts there are V cut.

Re: Punch or Cut

I cut my cigars doesnt matter which size they come. My girl Just gave me a small V cutter, so i will start to use it on smaller gauge cigars. I have smoked a few Pre-Vcut cigars and the smoke came out very good.

Re: Punch or Cut

I'm really looking forward to hearing from those who checked "other."

I cut. I once had an entire wrapper come off of a cigar while trying to get a punch to work its way through a particularly tough cap. trust me, you don't want to smoke a CAO Cameroon tubo without a wrapper...Nasty.

Re: Punch or Cut

CUT....
Punches channel the smoke thru a small hole which just ends up all tarred up. With a cut you can always recut an 1/8" off the end if it gets all ickey! I have a couple V cuts that I use every now and then. Not bad but still my second choice. But then that's just my opinion......

Re: Punch or Cut

Cut, it's just easier. I tried messing with a punch, and had the same problem as someone else here did... A thick cap, and an unraveling event.. Wasn't fun. :P

Re: Punch or Cut

I love my cheap-o V-cutter. I found the punch made the draw on some cigars difficult, and also made the stream of smoke to focused and hot for my po' tongue

I have a guillotine cutter that I use for monster ring guages, but, for the most part, the V wins out

What do you do?

I cut everything with my woody Xikar except padron annies. For some reason I like the annies punched as the draw always seems a little loose especially on the imperials.

Re: Punch or Cut

Always use a double bladed guillitine cutter, but am thinking about getting a punch. Can anyone recommend a particular one?

Re: Punch or Cut

For years I punched, and every now and then I still do. However 98% of the time now I cut. I have a Palio that works wonderfully but I have recently become very fond of the $4 "Havana Cutter" that bargainhumidors sells. That blade is super sharp and cuts anything 50 guage and below with amazing ease. Smoking away from home I would certainly bring my Palio, but for clipping and firing up a $1.50 stogie the Havana cutter and my culinary torch are the current tools of choice for this el cheapo smoker!

-Matt-

Jeff: Xikar makes a couple very nice punches. The AVO punch is incredibly cool but obscenely priced.

Re: Punch or Cut

I just use a single blade cutter. I have had the doubleblades unravel on me several times. I am thinking aout upgrading though because I have had a few bad cuts lately. I just cant justify spending the money. Why spend 40 dollars on a cutter, when you can spend that money on the actual smokes. Oh, when I am at one of my local cigar shops, I use their scissors (sp). They almsot always leave me with a perfect cut. There is just something about them.

Those little Havana Cutters ROCK!!! Last time I made an order with bargainhumidor.com I ordered 4-5 of those things. Always a sharp crisp cut. One of the best cutters I own! Glad to see I'm not the only one whose likes these!!!

Re: Punch or Cut

I really like this cutter. 29 bucks at tampa humidors, I also think I saw them as low as 25..
