4x4 Bundled Cigars

Picked up a bundle at the local shop because the price was great ($3 a smoke), the construction looked great for a bundle, and they are said to come out of the Davidoff and Avo factory. They're a Robusto size made in Dominican Republic. It says the long filler made by Occidental cigars, Santiago.

They are still in a long line behind other things in my humidor to smoke so I was wondering if anyone had experienced these cigars yet and had some insight to offer. Thanks.

Re: 4x4 Bundled Cigars

The 3x3 and 4x4 cigars are made by Davidoff. I believe these are made in "the other" (unnamed) factory just outside Villa Gonzalez, DR and not the main Tabadom factory. Henke Kelner oversees both factories though.

These cigars (like Private Stock) are first quality cigars that are rolled with tobacco that was judged too ugly to roll into a Davi, Avo, Griffin's, Cusano, etc. The cigars are not seconds of Davidoff and the blend is different from all the other lines the Davi factories produces. You could say it is a first quality cigar rolled from second quality tobacco.

The tobacco likely did not get any aging once it was judged ugly; and the finished cigars get no time in cedar aging rooms. These cigars are rolled and shipped right away, and may retailers are frequently sold out of them.

What this means is that you need to age the damn things 90 days before you go smoking them.. If you keep a 3x3 or 4x4 in your humidor for 18 to 24 months it will be outstanding.

Re: 4x4 Bundled Cigars

I buy the 3x3 Tubos frequently at a local shop, and they're wonderful smokes, but agreed, they do need some time.

I tend to wrap them in a cedar sleeve, re-tube them, and put them away for a few months to set.

Re: 4x4 Bundled Cigars

Is there any difference with the 3x3 and 4x4 in strength, flavor, etc.?

I have tried both and believe the blend to be the same.

As Silound pointed out the tubos are NOT cedar lined when you get the 3x3. I have had bad experience with cigars aged in unlined tubos; I have noticed metallic flavor transfer. So if you do get the 3x3s I think it is a good idea to take them out of the tubos or find cedar from other cigars to use inside of them.

Matt, you amaze me bro. The stuff you come up with has shown me that you can really get a good cigar! I gotta hand it to ya. I have been applying some of these ideas to the way I look for smokes and have come up with some very good cigars for discounted prices. You keep teaching folks and a person cannot give you enough RG...to match what you give to us here at CS.

Re: 4x4 Bundled Cigars

2 Guys does carry them, yes.

Many retailers carry them but they appear under several names depending on the seller.

"Bundles by Hendrik Kelner" is a good search phrase on Google to find them. "Davidoff Dominican Bundles" or "Davidoff 4x4 Bundles" will also get you some additional retailers.

I can't seem to find them on Cigarcyclopedia's Comparison Shopper page unfortunately.

While looking around for information I found this description of the 3X3 tubo cigar blend, which I believe to be the same as the 4X4 blend:

"It’s a medium-bodied blend featuring a Connecticut wrapper, Dominican-grown Olor binder and Olor, Piloto Cubano and San Vicente filler leaves, also from the Dominican Republic."

Re: 4x4 Bundled Cigars

matt:

Around here, Albertson's the grocery store carries a bundle cigar with a red band and green lettering called "Cuban Delight." I've only ever seen it in a Torpedo. It's a natural wrapper.

I've looked all over and can't find them. They age most wonderfully, with a nutty thick smoke and a very mild flavor, and they were only 1.99 retail at Albertson's.

I found tons of "Cuban Delights" the flavored stuff, but none of this particular singular Delight.

Have you by chance run across these in your searches? I'm dying to find if I can buy them online for a decent price. Two bucks is a hair too much when I can get Nic 3000's for that.

Re: 4x4 Bundled Cigars

Cuban Delights are a Victor Sinclair product if I recall right. Cigars International blew out a bunch of them in 2003 and 2004 and to be honest I didn't care for them. Perhaps another 4 years of age has improved them.. I imagine Albertson's doesn't move a lot of cigars. Is the cello showing signs of age?

I have an Albertson's just a mile from my house. I might stop in there and see if they have a humidor.

Re: 4x4 Bundled Cigars

I just posted this in the 3x3 forum

I just smoked a Lonsdale from my just arrived 4x4 bundle. It was well made, mild, and had a nice aroma. It was sorta like the 3x3 tubos Churchill, but much milder. I personally will buy the 3x3 over the 4x4's because the 3x3 Churchill was much more complex and chocolatey, and sat firmly in the medium strength range. Get the 3x3 Churchill.
